Overview:

The Portfolio and Project Manager will play a key role within the IT PMO, providing strategic oversight and operational excellence across the IT portfolio. This role is responsible not only for managing and delivering critical projects but also for driving disciplined portfolio review, prioritization, and investment alignment to ensure IT initiatives deliver maximum business value.

Working in close collaboration with Alnylam's Project Management Office, IT Business and Platform Leads, Expertise Area stakeholders, and third-party partners, the Portfolio and Project Manager will oversee an EA-specific portfolio from planning through delivery, ensuring that each initiative is strategically aligned, well-governed, and executed with the highest standards of quality, inclusivity, and transparency.

This position is hybrid and will be located in Cambridge, MA.

Responsibilities:

Strategic Domain Portfolio Management & Governance

  • Partner closely with IT vertical Business Partner Leads and Expertise Area stakeholders to support their portfolio of initiatives, ensuring strategic alignment, delivery transparency, and balanced resource utilization.
  • Facilitate the planning, coordination, and execution of IT portfolio reviews for the assigned Expertise Area, aligning initiatives with enterprise strategy, architectural direction, and capacity constraints.
  • Collaborate with PMO leadership and Business Partner Leads in annual and quarterly investment planning cycles, providing portfolio insights, prioritization recommendations, and funding analyses to inform decision-making.
  • Maintain portfolio visibility and transparency through comprehensive dashboard reporting, tracking project health, risk exposure, financial performance, and value realization across all active initiatives.
  • Facilitate portfolio governance forums (e.g., Portfolio Review Boards, Expertise Area Steering Committees), ensuring decisions are well-documented, dependencies are managed, and actions are completed to closure.
  • Drive ongoing portfolio optimization in partnership with Business Partner Leads by identifying overlapping, delayed, or low-value initiatives and recommending realignment or corrective actions to maximize business impact.

Project Leadership & Delivery Excellence

  • Manage end-to-end delivery of assigned strategic and cross-functional projects, from initiation through deployment and closeout.
  • Define project scope, objectives, and success criteria in collaboration with business sponsors, IT platform leads, and external partners.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive project plans, including schedule, budget, resource plan, risk register, and change management approach.
  • Ensure project execution adheres to PMO standards, governance processes for quality, compliance, and audit readiness.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate risks and issues, driving accountability and timely resolution across internal and external teams.
  • Deliver high-quality outcomes that meet stakeholder expectations for scope, schedule, and performance metrics.

Stakeholder & Partner Collaboration

  • Serve as a key liaison between IT, business partners, and third-party vendors to ensure consistent communication, alignment, and transparency.
  • Partner with IT Platform and Business Leads to define roadmaps, dependencies, and resource needs to enable portfolio delivery.
  • Engage implementation partners and vendors to manage scope, delivery quality, and contractual commitments.
  • Support the development of organizational change management and communications to promote adoption and awareness of delivered capabilities.

Continuous Improvement & PMO Contribution

  • Contribute to the ongoing evolution of PMO standards, tools, and best practices, including portfolio reporting, resource management, and project health assessment.
  • Provide coaching, mentorship, and thought leadership to project teams in applying consistent project management methodologies.
  • Participate in post-implementation reviews and lessons learned sessions to capture insights and continuously improve portfolio execution maturity.
  • Champion a culture of delivery excellence, accountability, and partnership across all levels of the organization.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; Master's degree preferred
  • Consulting background with demonstrated experience in strategic thinking and problem solving, ability to analyze complex situations and develop effective and appropriate solutions.
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects with multiple stakeholders and cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills to build and maintain strong relationships with business owners.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • PMP or other project management certification is preferred.

U.S. Pay Range

$142,800.00 - $193,200.00

The pay range reflects the full-time base salary range we expect to pay for this role at the time of posting. Base pay will be determined based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, skills, and education. This role is eligible for an annual short-term incentive award (e.g., bonus or sales incentive) and an annual long-term incentive award (e.g., equity).
