Principal Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provides or assists patients with baths or other personal hygiene activities.

2. Takes and records patient respiration rate, temperature and blood pressure.

3. May provide services as required according to research protocol when assigned to research area of the geriatric facility.

4. Cleans patient units; empties wastebasket and cares for flowers; cleans utility, storage and treatment rooms.

5. Issues and empties bedpans. May collect urine or fecal specimens as directed.

6. Exercises considerable initiative and judgement in observing adverse changes in patient affect, and reports to appropriate medical personnel.

7. May assist in postmortem care.

8. Performs additional duties as assigned.

III. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Work requires a high school level of educational development.

2. Requires certification from the Maryland Board of Nursing as a Certified Nursing Assistant.

3. Work requires the skills to read and understand instructions, add and subtract numbers, and make comparisons between numbers and letters.

4. Work requires the ability to understand and respond to simple written or verbal instructions. Incumbents must respond appropriately to instructions, questions, or requests for information. Work occasionally requires contact with patients and/or visitors which involves courtesy.

IV. Required Physical, Mental, and Visual Abilities

1. Lifting and/or carrying objects weighing more than 50 pounds.

2. Pushing and/or pulling non-motorized equipment (e.g., stretchers, supply carts, mops) weighing over 50 pounds.

3. Stooping and bending.

4. Reaching and grasping objects.

5. Walking and/or standing for extended periods of time.

V. Working Conditions

1. Work requires performing unpleasant diagnostic or patient care duties.

Responsible for performing services for the Johns Hopkins Bayview Specialty Hospital Programs (JHBSHP) population according to established methodology and techniques. The work of this class involves a wide range of patient care duties. Under close supervision from a technical superior, the employee is expected to solve simple problems by referring to work instructions or established work procedures which are readily learned.
