| Position Purpose |
Under the supervision of the Director of Upward Bound Shelton, this position is responsible for advising a caseload of students and coordinating the after-school program at Shelton High School. This position is responsible for promoting high school academic achievement and post-secondary success for program participants. These responsibilities require a student-centered approach, strong organizational abilities and collaboration. Coordination with other programs and organizations like non-profits, colleges, universities, businesses, community-based organizations, social service agencies and other Evergreen offices to enhance participant opportunities is desired. The position requires commuting between work sites including Evergreen, schools, agencies, and events.
Program Profile
The Evergreen State College Upward Bound is an educational enrichment program that promotes high school achievement and participation in post-secondary education among low-income, first-generation-to-college high school students. The program serves students from various backgrounds. The Evergreen State College Upward Bound Program has served communities in Western Washington since 1977. The Shelton High School Upward Bound program serves 63 participants in grades 9-12. The program is a 100% federally funded grant project with the U.S. Department of Education, and all positions and activities are dependent upon continued grant funding. |
| Nature and Scope |
The position is responsible for recruiting, advising, and supporting participants in the Upward Bound program, with a focus on promoting academic success and college readiness for low-income and first-generation students. The position involves coordinating program activities, monitoring student progress, and collaborating with school personnel, families, and community partners. The incumbent also assists with data collection, reporting, and special events, ensuring compliance with federal grant requirements. This role requires engagement in after-school, evening, weekend, and summer programming, including field trips, workshops, and residential activities. |
| Essential Functions |
- Recruit and enroll eligible participants, including conducting informational meetings, reviewing applications, and verifying eligibility.
- Advise and champion for students needs individually and in groups on academic success strategies, college admissions, financial aid, career planning, and post-secondary transition.
- Monitor and track 12th-grade participants to ensure successful college enrollment and persistence, extending support through their higher education journey.
- Meet with parents and guardians to intake program participants, discuss student progress, implement strategies for student success, and complete the FAFSA.
- Assess student needs, develop individualized action plans, and provide academic interventions.
- Refer students and families to social, health, and community resources as needed.
- Oversee after-school operations and develop academic, cultural, and recreational activities (e.g., tutoring, college visits, workshops, summer programs).
- Plan and implement workshops for students and parents on college readiness, financial aid, and career pathways.
- Teach the College Success course during the summer program, wherein students complete materials for their college ePortfolio.
- Help collect, enter, and maintain student data for program assessment and the Annual Performance Report (APR) for the U.S. Department of Education, and assist in preparing the APR and other compliance documentation.
- Supervise and occasionally transport students during program activities, including overnight events.
- Work closely with high school staff, Upward Bound team members, and community partners to align services with student needs.
- Maintain confidential student records and ensure program compliance with state and federal guidelines.
- Support broader Upward Bound initiatives, including staff training, committee participation, and community events.
- Occasionally supervise tutors, temporary staff, and student workers.

- Commitment to supporting disadvantaged students (e.g., low-income, first-generation) and ensuring their access to educational resources.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and written communication skills and enthusiasm for working with adolescents and young adults, as well as ability to work collaboratively with high school officials, parents, and students.
- Ability to advise students and families on college admissions, financial aid, and career pathways.
- Skill in developing and delivering workshops, assessing student needs, and developing individualized action plans.
- Proficiency in data management, Microsoft 365, and education support applications, such as Skyward, Canvas, and Google Classroom.
- Capacity to supervise tutors, temporary staff, and student workers.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of program information and records including student information and records.
- Knowledge of social, health, and community resources and ability to connect students to resources.
- Flexibility to work non-traditional hours (evenings/weekends), transport program participants, and travel, including some overnight trips.
- Ability to participate in physical activities (e.g., hiking, team sports).

| Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree in education, social sciences, or related field.
- One year of experience advising, counseling, or teaching disadvantaged/less-represented students.

| Desired Qualifications |
- Master's degree in education, social sciences, or related field.
- Valid state teaching certification.
- Experience with TRIO programs (e.g., Upward Bound, Talent Search) or similar college-access initiatives.
- Bilingual proficiency (Spanish/English).

| Conditions of Employment |
- Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
- This position is part of a bargaining unit and covered by the Student Support Services Staff collective bargaining agreement.
- Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
- Prior to an official offer of employment, a Declaration Regarding Sexual Misconduct form must be submitted to the college per RCW 28B.112.080. The college will contact current and past employers to verify this information. Applicants who provide inaccurate information in their declaration will be disqualified and, if the inaccuracies are discovered after the applicant has been hired, it shall be grounds for termination.
- Must meet the eligible driver requirements: 1) Valid U.S. driver's license, 2) 18 years old or older, 3) Two or more years of fully licensed driving experience, and 4) Clean driving record with none of the following within the past 2 years: Any suspension/revocation of license for reckless driving, hit and run, leaving an accident scene, failure to appear, DUI or other vehicle-related felony; or for multiple traffic offenses (2 moving violations/infractions in 12 months/3 moving violations/infractions in 24 months) resulting in a Conditional Status driving record or subsequent suspension/revocation of license.
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends and travel for work including occasional overnight travel.
