HC Pro 2 - Clin Vet Science

Perform and validate all routine and special tests associated with the hematology, chemistry, coagulation, point of care, immunology, blood bank, urinalysis and parasitology according to Good Laboratory Practice regulations. Testing includes instrument maintenance, specimen processing, quality control (QC)/statistics, troubleshooting protocol/instrument issues verification of results and accurate interpretation and reporting. Technologists must maintain a safe work environment while handling specimens that include blood, feces, tissues, organs and body fluids.

Provide interpretative support for laboratory reports and recommend review by clinical pathologist when appropriate. Assist in training of new personnel and provide supervision of co-workers with different qualifications. Act as a consultant for clinicians, clinic staff and students on proper sample submission and result interpretation. Professional services require 24/7 access to testing. Staff members are required to participate in weekend/holiday on-call rotation and coverage of evenings, weekends and holidays.

Location and Work environment

• This work is generally performed at The University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, and at the Veterinary Medical Center.
• The work environment includes working with blood, feces, body fluids, tissues and organs.
• Special attention to safety practices in a Biosafety Level 2 Laboratory is required to maintain a safe work environment for technologists and other members of the hospital team.
• Work may also include exposure to noise, bright/low lighting, temperature variations, and allergens such as mold, dust, hay and animal hair and dander.

Work Schedule

• Hours vary with start time from 6:00am - 11:00am to 2:30pm - 7:30pm M-F.
• Rotating weekends, holidays and on-call.

Primary Responsibilities

70%- Diagnostic Testing

• Performs diagnostic testing on patient samples to aid VMC Clinicians, staff and students in the diagnosis and/or monitoring of various disease states.
  • Diagnostic testing includes routine and stat testing such as CBC (complete blood count), chemistry profiles (evaluates liver/kidney function, glucose and electrolytes) and urinalysis.
• Reviews and analyzes test results for accuracy and evaluates test results for critical values.
• Recommends verification processes and/or review of results by Clinical Pathologist when indicated.
  • High quality testing and results are required to provide support for diagnostic and GLP research testing.
  • Testing processes include but are not limited to:
    • Advising clinicians/staff/students on optimal specimens for testing
    • Pre-analytical sample analysis evaluation for acceptability and processing
    • Evaluation of QC/QA on equipment and manual methods to determine acceptability for daily performing and reporting
    • Evaluation of specimens according to standard operating procedures and assessment of reports for further review by Lab Supervisor/Manager or Clinical Pathologist.

• Maintains ASCP Certification and renews every three years.

20%- Training

• Trains VMC clinicians and staff on all Point of Care instrumentation (i-STAT blood gas analyzers using syringes or micropipettes; Glucose analyzers; Total Plasma Protein and Packed cell volume using a Safepette).
• Supports test selection, ordering and the understanding reports.
• Train the lab after-hours teams, supporting after hours for any questions (24/7 support availability).
  • Training for these areas includes routine operation of analyzers, the ability to troubleshoot basic problems, requesting the test in the analyzer/hospital or lab system and interpretation of results.

10%- Quality Control

• Performs quality control, quality assurance, instrument maintenance, daily and monthly monitoring of analyzers, troubleshooting test results or equipment issues.
• Daily maintenance and quality control/quality assurance review is required to verify that instruments, procedures and staff are able to provide high quality and accurate results for diagnosis and treatment of VMC patients and valid results for research evaluation and publications.
• Recognizes when a test system is not within expected range and provides troubleshooting, notifies appropriate resources, contacts technical support, provides basic service according to advice from vendors to resolve as soon as possible.
• Describes the system errors and provides an estimate of time to results to limit loss of specimen quality and assure timely results.
• Triage specimens as priorities are required to address the critical needs of the patient.
• Audit test results performed by other members of the team and report preventative and corrective action.

Required Qualifications

• BS/BA in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS)/Medical Technologist(MT) with certification (ASCP preferred).
• Plus at least 2 years of experience, or a combination of related work experience and education to equal six years.
