Summary

As a Fellow, and under the guidance of a mentor, you will participate in a biomedical research environment that is supportive and favorable to learning, and includes opportunities to interact with peers, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and other investigators to acquire essential academic credentials and research skills with the purpose of increasing competitiveness for MD, PhD, or MD-PhD programs in biomedical sciences.

Position Responsibilities
  • Devote at least 75% effort to the research project developed collaboratively between the mentor and fellow.

  • 25% effort will be for further professional and academic development.

  • Work as a team with other lab members to advance projects in the lab for manuscripts and grant proposals.

  • Work independently on a research project, formulated in collaboration with the research mentor, with the goal of producing a manuscript.

  • Take direction from the PI to complete projects.

  • Learn to develop, in a mentored fashion, hypotheses and design experiments to test hypotheses.

  • Demonstrate good organizational and time management skills.

  • Record completed and accurate laboratory methods and results in a laboratory notebook.

  • Use appropriate tools and software to document and analyze collected data.

  • Communicate summaries of experimental results to lab members and mentor.

  • Evaluate, interpret, and assess experimental data and quality control of assays.

  • Participate in program and lab group activities such as lab meetings and seminars to enrich the participants' verbal skills, analytical and critical thinking abilities and build the academic credentials to support completion of an MD, PhD, or MD-PhD degree.

  • Participate in periodic review meetings with program leadership to assess progress in achieving program metrics.

  • Participate in research conferences within and beyond the institution.

  • Participate in community engagement and outreach activities.

  • Knowledge of basic biology and chemistry principles.

  • Ability to perform experiments, record data, and analyze data.

  • Problem solving and critical thinking skills.

  • Oral and written communication skills.

Qualifications

Minimum Required Education: A baccalaureate degree within the last 36 months, and not currently enrolled in a degree program

Physical Requirements

Work requires occasionally lifting moderate weight materials, standing, or walking continuously.

Work Environment

Occasional exposure to dust, noise, temperature changes, or contact with water or other liquids. Work is performed in an environmentally controlled environment.

Sensory Acuity

Ability to detect and translate speech or other communication required. May occasionally require the ability to distinguish colors and perceive relative distances between objects.
