Job Title: Lab Technical Specialist Reports to: Laboratory Director, Technical Director Job Summary: The Laboratory Technical Specialist provides advanced technical expertise and oversight in specialized laboratory functions, supporting the implementation and administration of complex testing procedures, quality systems, and operational practices. This role serves as a subject matter expert, offering guidance to staff and management, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives. The Technical Specialist may lead training, troubleshoot technical issues, and support cross-functional projects. Duties/Responsibilities:
- Serve as a technical lead to laboratory staff, providing direction, mentorship, and training on specialized methods, equipment, and procedures.
- Oversee and review complex forms, documentation, databases, and technical records to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Provide expert-level analysis and interpretation of laboratory data, procedures, and results; advise management and staff on technical matters.
- Support the implementation of new methods, instrumentation, and process improvements across departments.
- Conduct audits and operational reviews to ensure accuracy of testing, calibration, and equipment performance.
- Collaborate with quality and operations teams to resolve technical issues and discrepancies.
- Participate in or lead cross-functional projects, including planning, budgeting, and execution of technical initiatives.
- Interpret and apply laboratory policies, procedures, and applicable regulations; provide guidance to ensure compliance.
- Contribute to the development and revision of SOPs, training materials, and technical documentation.
- Promote a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement within the laboratory.
- Represent the technical function in internal and external audits, client meetings, and regulatory inspections.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Advanced to expert-level understanding of laboratory testing principles, instrumentation, and quality systems.
- Comprehensive knowledge of regulatory standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 17025, NELAC, EPA).
- Proficiency in laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and technical documentation.
- Familiarity with calibration, validation, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
- Strong understanding of project planning, evaluation, and reporting.
- Ability to perform and oversee complex technical procedures with precision and accuracy.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and presentation abilities across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Skilled in training and mentoring staff in technical procedures and compliance.
- Proficient in preparing detailed technical reports, correspondence, and documentation.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field; Master's strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of laboratory experience, including at least 2 years in a specialized technical or leadership role.
- Experience with advanced instrumentation, method development, or regulatory compliance is highly desirable.
- OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit, stand, and move throughout laboratory and office environments.
- Manual dexterity to operate and computer systems.
- Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to work in a laboratory environment with exposure to chemicals and environmental samples, using appropriate PPE.
