DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position is responsible for maintaining and repairing a wide range of vehicles and equipment powered by gasoline or diesel engines. The work supports safe operation, reliable performance, and compliance with state requirements. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:
- Vehicle Repair: Repair cars, trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment by replacing parts and restoring proper function
- Preventative Maintenance: Complete routine servicing tasks to extend equipment life and reduce breakdowns
- Inspection Work: Conduct official state safety and emissions inspections and ensure compliance with required standards
- Diagnostic Procedures: Use approved tools and methods to identify mechanical problems and determine repair steps
- Safety Practices: Maintain a clean work area, follow safety rules, and take actions that prevent injuries and accidents
- Field Adjustments: Carry out minor repairs and performance adjustments in the field to support safe operation

- Full-time employment
- Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- This position may require travel, overtime, and dual shifts. Dual shifts in effect November through March.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
- Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $55,492 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Successful completion of the commonwealth's Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
- Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Special Requirements:
- This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
- This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations on the first day of employment.
- All positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the six-month probationary period.
- This position requires employees to pass the Department of Transportation's New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
- This position is required to obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) within the six-month probationary period.
- Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
Additional Requirements:
- This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
