What Your Job Will Be Like

Sandias Advanced System Integration and Verification Department (6333) delivers Integration & Test, System Verification & Validation, and software for a large-scale remote sensing satellite ground system. As the technical integrator, you will lead a diverse, collaborative team of Sandia, Government, and Industry partners to shift from standalone testing toward integration with external entities, ensuring complex software systems are developed and validated correctly. You bring deep software engineering experience, fluency in testing methodologies, and a strong grasp of lifecycle development, hardware platforms, and site installation requirements. You will execute work using Agile methods and collaborate across organizations to deliver the next generation ground system that supports high consequence national security missions.

This role offers the chance to lead through influence, build an advanced, modular software testing pipeline for hybrid environments, and guide testing at every level and CI/CD in the satellite/remote sensing domain. You will lead a currently 10 person team with planned growth this year, cultivate healthy, inclusive teams, and steward results aligned to Sandias mission and leadership expectationsbuilding trusted relationships, developing people, and inspiring purposeful innovation while investing in your own growth.

On any given day you will be expected to perform the following:

  • Work with Advanced Systems Program Office (ASPO) management, customers, and staff to develop and implement a strategic test plan and schedule that supports the execution of planned and future work.
  • Address current program needs while developing and articulating a future vision for the organizations capabilities in close partnership with laboratory partners.
  • Ensure customer needs are satisfied by managing and coordinating specific work, overall program and project plans, budgets, structures, schedules, and staffing requirements as needed.
  • Engage in research and technology communities to identify future opportunities, increase visibility of the departments core capabilities, and recruit and develop the next generation of leaders in the field.
  • Manage employee recruitment, selection, training, performance assessment, work assignments, recognition, and career growth and satisfaction actions.
  • Ensure consistent alignment with laboratory standards and guidelines related to Safety, Security, and Quality.

This position is based in Albuquerque, NM, and requires onsite work. Limited travel is required.

Salary Range

$163,700 - $278,000

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelors degree in a relevant discipline and eight (8) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q and SCI security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal Manager, R&D Science and Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience.
  • A graduate degree in science or engineering (MS or Ph.D.).
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills in developing trusting relationships with peers, staff, management, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the development and delivery of presentations, proposals, reports and documentation.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage ambiguity and develop strategic direction in a dynamic environment.
  • Experience and background in large-scale, enterprise-level distributed software systems.
  • Experience in the software ground station domain, particularly for space-based systems.
  • Experience in real-time systems for remote sensing.
  • Familiarity with modern software development practices and tools, including implementing and adopting Agile techniques for software development.
  • Experience providing integrated engineering solutions in support of high-consequence national security missions, including inception, elaboration, construction, and deployment of advanced information systems.
  • Experience or knowledge of the National Security Space Innovations mission area.
  • Proven experience interacting with and influencing a variety of partners, customers, industry partners, management, and staff.
  • Understanding of the organizations work and ability to align expertise with potential beneficiaries, collaborators, and customers.
  • Demonstrated awareness of and ability to work across Sandias program and organizational structures.
  • A history of establishing and maintaining trusted partnerships.
  • Proven leadership skills including vision development and execution, mentoring individuals, guiding multidisciplinary teams, and collaborating with others.
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting, hiring, and developing/mentoring new personnel.
  • Knowledge of Sandias technical base, organization, and policies.
  • Established network and partnerships within Sandia.
  • Previous management experience.
  • Active DOE Q and SCI or equivalent.
About Our Team

Organization 06333 has system engineering and system integration and test responsibilities for a large satellite ground system developed to support high-consequence national assets related to nonproliferation and national security missions. Our systems target a range of applications and complexity, including remote and in-situ sensing systems, satellite communications and control, distributed computing and analysis, and real-time data collection, management, exploitation, and dissemination.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.
