The Role:

The Role:

Reporting to the Chief Philanthropy Officer, the Director of Planned Giving will serve as a key philanthropic strategist and relationship builder, leading a robust and growing estate and deferred giving program with exceptional momentum and depth of prospect opportunity. This role offers the chance to step into a fertile landscape of engaged donors and significant unrealized potential, designing and executing a comprehensive planned giving strategy that advances both immediate and longterm philanthropic goals.

The Director will provide expert leadership in the development, marketing, and stewardship of complex charitable gifts; skillfully interpret and apply relevant legal and regulatory frameworks; and cultivate enduring relationships with donors and their advisors. Through thoughtful planning, personalized engagement, and strategic vision, the Director will secure impactful planned gifts, expand the major/planned giving pipeline, and broaden the organization's philanthropic constituency. What You'll Do:



  • Mission, Values, and Leadership Representation
  • Exemplifies Saint John's core values of dignity, justice, compassion, integrity, and excellence in all interactions with donors, colleagues, professionals, and community partners.
  • Serves as an effective ambassador for Saint John's mission to donors, professional advisors, and the broader community.
  • Participates in internal and external meetings, committees, and professional or civic organizations as a representative of the Foundation and health center, as appropriate.
  • Planned Giving Strategy and Program Leadership
  • Develops, implements, and continuously enhances a comprehensive planned giving strategy aligned with Saint John's mission, donor interests, and longterm organizational priorities.
  • Creates, monitors, and updates an annual and multiyear strategic plan with measurable goals, objectives, and benchmarks for program growth and sustainability.
  • Leads the establishment of a Gift Planning Advisory Council composed of financial professionals who serve as ambassadors and thought partners for the Foundation.
  • Maintains deep technical expertise in all aspects of charitable estate and deferred giving.
  • Donor Identification, Cultivation, and Stewardship
  • Identifies, qualifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards current and prospective donors capable of making significant planned and blended gifts.
  • Designs and executes individualized solicitation and stewardship strategies tailored to donors' philanthropic goals and personal circumstances.
  • Responds promptly and thoughtfully to donor inquiries regarding planned giving opportunities.
  • Manages Saint John's planned giving recognition society, The Madeleine Society , ensuring meaningful engagement and acknowledgment of legacy donors.
  • Tracks estate gifts from notification through probate and completion.
  • Gift Design, Legal Oversight, and Risk Management
  • In consultation with donors' professional advisors, provides general legal and tax information related to bequests, lifeincome gifts, and other planned giving vehicles.
  • Drafts and reviews gift illustrations and related documentation.
  • Works with legal counsel to advise Foundation staff and health center leadership on legal, regulatory, and compliance matters related to planned giving.
  • Implements and oversees systems and procedures designed to mitigate legal and fiduciary risk while protecting the best interests of donors and the Foundation.
  • Assists the COO and CFO in maintaining appropriate audit trails for planned giving transactions.
  • Professional Advisor and Community Engagement
  • Identifies, educates, and cultivates relationships with attorneys, financial and estate planners, realtors, and other professional advisors to build strategic referral networks.
  • Develops and presents planned giving seminars and educational programs for donors and professional audiences.
  • Strengthens Saint John's presence and reputation within the professional advisor community.
  • Marketing, Communications, and Donor Records
  • Oversees the quality, accuracy, and effectiveness of all planned giving marketing materials, publications, and communications, whether produced internally or externally.
  • Ensures the integrity, accuracy, and strategic use of planned giving donor records and database systems.
  • Collaborates closely with Foundation colleagues to integrate planned giving into broader development and donor engagement strategies.
  • Financial Management, Operations, and Governance Support
  • Develops and manages planned giving budgets and financial projections to support sustainable growth and continuity of the program.
  • Provides staff support to the Legacy (Planned Giving) Committee and participates on additional committees as assigned.
  • Maintains departmental policies, procedures, objectives, and performance improvement standards.
  • Professional Development and Continuous Improvement
  • Maintains professional growth and expertise through continuing education, seminars, workshops, and active participation in professional associations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support the mission and advancement goals of Saint John's.

  • Partner strategically: Work closely with senior philanthropy leadership, advisors, and engaged donors.

  • Serve a mission that matters: Advance compassionate, innovative care at Saint John's Health Center. Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree, preferably in Accounting, and/or Financial Planning (preferred)
  • Preferred upon hire: Certified as a Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and/or Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CSPG)
  • Coursework/Training: Planned giving certificate or experience serving in a planned giving role elsewhere (preferred)
  • 6 years in planned giving or related field at a large non-profit institution.
  • strategic planning; proposal development; and planned giving portfolio management.

The full pay range is listed in accordance with applicable law. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, organizational compensation alignment, and the approved hiring department budget for the position. This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation and benefits.

Further, we want our leaders to live in or near the communities we serve. Therefore, leaders applying for this role will be required to work a hybrid schedule, which consists of three days onsite, two days remote and live within a reasonable commuting distance to the ministry or service area they support and lead.

Posted are the minimum and the maximum wage rates on the wage range for this position. The successful candidate's placement on the wage range for this position will be determined based upon relevant job experience and other applicable factors. These amounts are the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
