BASIC FUNCTION
Sets up and operates spring grinding machines in a manufacturing environment. Responsible for installing and adjusting grinding wheels to ensure precise, quality results.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Loads springs into grinder and monitors the grinding process to achieve proper grind specifications.
- Inspects finished springs for correctly ground ends and verifies desired length tolerances are met.
- Selects, installs, and adjusts grinding wheels based on job requirements.
- Sets up machines for production runs, including adjusting feed rates, speeds, and grinding pressure.
- Reads and interprets work orders, blueprints, and job specifications to ensure parts meet required dimensions and quality standards.
- Uses precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges to verify part dimensions.
- Monitors production output for consistency and makes adjustments to maintain quality throughout the run.
- Identifies and troubleshoots basic machine malfunctions; escalates mechanical issues to maintenance as needed.
- Performs routine machine maintenance including lubrication, cleaning, and wheel dressing.
- Follows all safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Maintains accurate production records including quantity, scrap, and inspection results.
- Supports and mentors less experienced operators in tooling selection and proper equipment operation.
- Keeps work area clean and organized in compliance with 5S or housekeeping standards.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- One to three months of related experience and/or training preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Prior experience in a manufacturing or machining operating/set up environment a plus.
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, work orders, safety rules, plant policies, and procedure manuals.
- Proficient in basic math including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals across all units of measure.
- Familiarity with precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges preferred.
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to producing quality work.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced production environment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to stand and walk for the duration of an 8-10 hour shift.
- Frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel, and manipulate parts and equipment controls.
- Regularly required to reach with hands and arms; occasional bending, stooping, and crouching.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- Specific vision requirements include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to distinguish color and detect surface irregularities.
- Must be able to work in a manufacturing environment that may include exposure to noise, dust, metal particles, coolants, and lubricants.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required, including safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toed footwear.
