The Opportunity

Ulteig is seeking a per diem Cultural Resource Specialist - Crew Chief to participate in and direct Archaeological Technicians to complete fieldwork and reporting for compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulations for public and private clients across all of our Lifeline Sectors: Transportation, Renewables, Power, and Water, as well as other industries we serve. This position will be overseen in the field and office by a Principal Investigator (PI). Our goal is to assist clients with developing an approach to cultural resources and State, Federal, and Tribal compliance, and due diligence that balances development with cultural resources protection. This position will be based in our office in Bismarck, North Dakota, and is expected to frequently travel for fieldwork within the region.

The Cultural Resource Specialist - Crew Chief will assist in and complete file searches, fieldwork, monitoring, lab work, and documentation as assigned. This will be done under the oversight of the PI, with the purpose of completing the National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 process or related due diligence efforts. Proven experience in inventory, testing, excavation, and construction monitoring will be useful to participate in the Section 106 process and assist and advise the work of Archaeological Technicians in the field and office. This team member will have some contact with regulatory agencies, tribes, and/or clients.

What You'll Do



  • Participate in all aspects of field inventory, testing, mitigation, and monitoring, under the supervision of the PI and Senior Cultural Resource Specialist, in support of projects for various industries and markets
  • Assist and advise Archaeological Technicians in correct field work approaches and procedures
  • Assist in writing site forms and small project survey reports with minimal supervision
  • Communicate project archaeological results to the project team as requested
  • Assist with Tribal Traditional Cultural Specialists in the field
  • Assist PI with public and private clients with historic properties and Tribal coordination/compliance



What We Expect from You



  • Bachelor's Degree in archaeology, anthropology, cultural resource management, geography, or related field
  • 2-5 years of related experience
  • Working understanding of NHPA and Tribal involvement in the Section 106 process
  • Working knowledge of using Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and applicable industry-related software packages (e.g., ArcGIS, Field Maps)
  • Must have authorization to work permanently in the US
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to operate a 4-wheel drive pickup; trailering and utility terrain vehicle (UTV) operation experience is a plus
  • Must be able to carry up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to walk at least 5 miles per day in rough terrain and at least 10 miles per day in flat terrain
  • Must be capable of using shovels, pounding stakes, opening/closing gates, changing tires, and other duties/equipment associated with fieldwork
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather
  • Must be willing to travel frequently for fieldwork in remote areas with overnight stays
  • Demonstrates openness to innovation by embracing and applying evolving technology and AI tools to enhance workflows, solve problems, and drive continuous improvement.
  • Must have authorization to work permanently in the U.S.

Additional Opportunity Details:
Target Base Compensation Range for this role is $31.40 - $42.44 per hour
* Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your job specific skills, education, training, job location, number of years of experience related to this role and comparison to other employees already in this role.
