Salary Range: $45,000 - $50,000

Position Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Assistant Scientist performs a range of routine and complex research laboratory procedures in accordance with established protocols and standards. This role supports the Center for Metabolic Research in developing cardiac regenerative therapies through the manipulation of cardiac metabolism in cardiomyocytes. The Assistant Scientist provides technical expertise by designing and executing scientific experiments and may independently manage experiments or small research projects requiring advanced knowledge in a specialized scientific discipline. Responsibilities include applying molecular biology techniques such as RNA and protein isolation, gel electrophoresis, qPCR, cell culture, genotyping, and immunohistochemistry; collecting, organizing, and analyzing data using statistical software; and preparing research findings for presentations, reports, manuscripts, and publications. The role also involves maintaining accurate records, ordering laboratory supplies, troubleshooting and assisting with equipment maintenance, and supporting the training of undergraduate students. The Assistant Scientist may perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:
* Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills and Abilities:
* Demonstrated proficiency in molecular biology techniques
* Ability to use the Microsoft office programs and applicable computer software
* Demonstrated ability to complete experiments in a timely manner
* Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
* Experience operating all standard laboratory equipment
* Demonstrated ability to work with laboratory animals
* Techniques to be performed include, but are not limited to: mice handling, genotyping, cell culture to maintain and expand cell lines for experiments.
* Cell isolation, fluorescence microscopy, gel electrophoresis, DNA, RNA isolation, western blot. Prepares and determines suitability of solutions and reagents following defined formulas and procedures.
* Documents and reports all experimental results.
* Completes required logs and supporting documents.
* Maintains and troubleshoots equipment, routine repairs or notifying service personnel when more complex problems occur.

Essential Duties:
* Performs a variety of research laboratory techniques with primary focus on metabolic and reproductive function.
* Executing experimental protocols, maintaining records on all experiments, and maintaining equipment.
* Analyzes research results and prepares results for presentations at meetings and conferences, research reports, manuscripts and papers.
* May assist with the supervision of other research support staff.
* Utilizes various molecular biology techniques such as RNA/protein isolation, Gel electrophoresis, qPCR, cell culture, genotyping, immunohistochemistry
* Collecting and organizing data using statistical software packages
* Analyzing research results and preparing results for presentation at meetings and conferences, research reports, manuscripts, and papers
* Ordering supplies, examines instrument malfunctions, and assists in their repair.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
