Job Summary

A Structured Cabling Technician I is an entry level low voltage technician responsible for supporting the installation and maintenance of structured cabling systems in commercial buildings and data centers. This role provides hands on experience and a clear career path within the telecom and low voltage field. Working under the direction of a Lead Technician, this position assists with installing Cat5e, Cat6, and fiber optic cabling, building cable pathways, terminating connections, labeling infrastructure, and assisting with testing. Technicians work on active commercial construction and infrastructure projects while maintaining safety, quality, and organized jobsite practices.

Job Responsibilities




  • Participate in daily jobsite meetings to review project plans, tasks, and safety requirements



  • Gather tools, materials, and cabling needed for installation work



  • Pull and route Cat5e, Cat6, and fiber optic cables through ceilings, walls, conduits, and pathways



  • Install cable support systems including J hooks, D rings, ladder racks, and cable trays



  • Dress and route cabling within IT closets, equipment racks, and work area outlets



  • Terminate network cables using jacks, keystones, and RJ45 modular plugs



  • Label cables and infrastructure according to project documentation standards



  • Assist with basic cable testing to verify continuity and performance



  • Support wireless access point installation and related cabling tasks



  • Read and follow floor plans, blueprints, and installation instructions



  • Work on ladders, lifts, and within ceiling spaces as required for installations



  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas



  • Follow jobsite safety procedures, OSHA guidelines, and proper PPE requirements




Job Requirements




  • High school diploma or GED equivalent



  • Skilled trade or construction background preferred; structured cabling experience not required



  • 0 to 2 years of experience in construction, electrical, telecom, or low voltage environments preferred



  • Basic understanding of structured cabling systems including Cat5e, Cat6, and fiber is a plus



  • Ability to use basic hand tools such as snips, cable strippers, drills, and punch down tools



  • Ability to follow instructions and read simple floor plans or blueprints



  • Strong safety awareness and ability to work on active commercial jobsites



  • Ability to work under the direction of a Lead Technician in a team environment



  • OSHA 10 certification preferred

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)




  • Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00 PM to 3:30 AM



  • Ability to work on ladders, scissor lifts, and within ceiling spaces



  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds when required



  • Ability to stand and work on feet for extended periods during the shift



  • Required tools include basic hand tools such as a multi bit screwdriver, tape measure, snips, needle nose pliers, channel lock pliers, cable stripper, punch down tool, flashlight, tool pouch, and work boots (steel toe or composite toe)



  • Proper personal protective equipment must be worn and maintained while on jobsites
