JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Research Engineer - Intern

We are searching for a Research Engineer Intern to join our Supply Chain Engineering Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. ARL/Penn State's purpose is to develop innovative solutions in support of the engineering and technology needs of the Department of Defense. Through this internship, you will have opportunities to work across departments in the Applied Sustainment Technology Division.

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

You will:

  • Perform engineering experiments, tests, and data collection to ensure data integrity, quality control, and protocol compliance

  • Apply an analytical approach to the solution of a wide variety of problems; apply specialized techniques in selecting and evaluating approaches to unforeseen or novel problems

  • Collaborate with other team members of different skillsets/backgrounds to accomplish project goals

  • Build prototypes for testing purposes; perform data analysis, optimization studies, and other investigations including sustainment and decision-making

  • Review and evaluate results and conclusions of research tasks

  • Document and communicate findings and recommendations in professional reports and presentations

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Ability to perform data analysis with skills in Excel, R, and/or Python (or similar technology)

  • Ability to explore research methodologies

  • Ability to prepare data for use in computational models

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment while meeting task schedule requirements

  • Written and verbal communication skills to communicate research findings to sponsors and collaborate with team members

Your working location can/will be on-site or hybrid, but fully remote opportunities may exist for the right candidate. For in-person work, your working location will be State College, PA. Questions related to flexible work should be directed to the hiring manager during the interview process.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies. All positions at ARL require candidates topossess the ability to obtain a government security clearance; you will be notified during the interview process if this position is subject to a government background investigation. You must be a U.S. citizen to apply. Employment with the ARL will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
