Job Summary

HPC Specialist functions as a facilitator and serves as a liaison for all researchers on campus. Assists faculty/students to write submission scripts to use IRCCs computational computing solutions, and to efficiently use the technology to conduct research. Provides training and provides facility documentation for grants, assists in the implementation and development of research cluster, and participates in coordinating plans with other government agencies.

  • Serves as the liaison between faculty, students and the Instructional & Research Computing Center's (IRCC) technical staff.
  • Promotes computational computing capabilities of the IRCC to faculty, builds relationships and creates collaborative opportunities between faculty, academic departments and the IRCC.
  • Creates lesson plans and conducts workshops on High Performance Computing (HPC) programming, HPC data management, HPC schedulers and other HPC related topics as the need arises.
  • Administers HPC environment in order to help teach and answer faculty and students questions related to the IRCC's computational resources. Participates in some daily administration duties to help keep knowledge of the environment up to date as needed. Serves as a backup administrator in cases where the two primary administrators need additional assistance.
  • Researches grant opportunities directly for the IRCC or in collaboration with faculty and academic departments.
  • Keeps abreast of the latest computational technologies.
  • Serves as a team player and take part in IRCC projects as needed.
  • Cross-trains co-workers as needed.
  • Provides input and suggestions on computational computing infrastructure, cluster design and yet to be implemented technologies. Participate in SSerca and ACCESS meetings and Super Computing Conferences, including assisting with booth management.
  • Participates in research when the opportunities present itself.
  • Assists in development of IRCC procedures and processes.
  • Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, public health emergencies, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.


Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or in a computational science field; OR six (6) years of experience in a related field; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience. One (1) year of computational computing experience.



Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with administration of computational computing clusters including, but not limited to GPU clusters, General HPC clusters, and SMP environments. Experience with Centos or similar Linux distributions.
  • Experience with programming jobs to run on parallel environments. CUDA and Fortran programming expertise.
  • Experience with HPC job schedulers, especially job submission is required. Slurm scheduler experience.
  • Experience and understanding of parallel filesystems is preferred Understanding of TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, & LDAP.
  • Knowledge of grants.
  • Knowledge of HPC and AI clusters and tools.
