Position Description:

The Department of Health, Sport, and Human Physiology invites applications for a full time, 9-month, non-tenure track, Instructional Track (open-rank) faculty position in Exercise Science, for the academic year 2026-27, beginning August 19, 2026, renewable for a total of three years (2026-2029), and renewable in one-, two-, or three-year increments thereafter. Applications are sought from candidates with a demonstrated potential or established record of outstanding teaching in exercise science or kinesiology. Duties of this position include didactic teaching (80%) and service (20%). Possible courses to be taught include Applied Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, Exercise Testing and Prescription, and other courses within area of expertise. A minimum of a master's degree in a related discipline must be awarded by the start date in August 2026.

UNIVERSITY AND DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The University of Iowa is one of the nation's premier public research universities with 33,564 students from 114 countries and all 50 states. The Department of Health, Sport, and Human Physiology is a thriving program with multiple majors, minors, and focus areas. The department has shown significant growth over the past several years and is currently the largest department at the University of Iowa with 2500+ undergraduate students across six majors including Human Physiology, Exercise Science, Health Studies, Health Promotion, Sport and Recreation Management, and Therapeutic Recreation. To accommodate this growth, a new six-story, $249 million Health Science Academic Building that will house the Departments of Health, Sport, and Human Physiology; Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences; and Communication Sciences and Disorders, is scheduled to be completed in spring 2026. This new building will become a hub for innovative teaching and learning, community outreach and engagement, experiential education, and cutting-edge biomedical, clinical, and community health-related research.

Education Requirement:


  • Master's degree (or higher) in exercise science, kinesiology, or related field conferred by the start date.


Required Qualifications:


  • Must demonstrate excellent communication skills as evidenced by application materials and prior experience.
  • Previous experience teaching a full semester-length course or lab as a primary instructor or graduate TA at the collegiate level.
  • Previousteaching experience in at least two of the following courses:exercise physiology, biomechanics, and/or exercise testing and prescription.


Desirable Qualifications:


  • PhD or ABD in exercise science, kinesiology, or related field.
  • Previous teaching experience in large-enrollment courses (60-80 students) at the collegiate level.
  • Previous experience supervising graduate teaching assistants.
  • Previous experience supervising or teaching exercise science lab courses.
