Sleep Lab Tech - Fulltime Nights

Sleep Lab Tech performs comprehensive sleep testing and analysis, and associated interventions under the general supervision of the Medical Director and/or Cardiopulmonary Supervisor or designee. Compiles data into a report for physician review.

Duties:

  • Accurately applies appropriate sensors and monitoring devices to the patient according to laboratory standards. Ensures that electrode impedances meet laboratory standards.
  • Writes a comprehensive patient history gathering appropriate information from patient, patient's record and family members to include any sleep disturbances. Explains test procedure(s) to patient and family members present.
  • Performs polysomnograms according to standards of the laboratory: PSG with and without continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or bi-directional positive airway pressure (BiPAP), multiple sleep latency test, split-night PSG.
  • "Determines and initiates appropriate treatment modalities/interventions per physician order/protocol.

  • Recognizes artifact (patient or environmental). Documents, eliminates or takes proper measures to monitor the artifact.
  • Facilitates high quality recording while supporting routine and emergency patient needs.
  • Observes, monitors and documents all pertinent data on the patient's medical record before, during and again after polysomnogram procedure according to laboratory standards.
  • Identifies normal/abnormal wake-sleep patterns. Identifies normal/abnormal wake-sleep clinical events.
  • Tabulates and analyzes the wake-sleep clinical event data.
  • Generates an analysis summary to accurately reflect recorded and scored data.
  • "Assists Cardiopulmonary Services Director in the development and on-going review of policies, procedures and protocols for the Sleep Laboratory.
  • Assists in the provision of public awareness education. Shares knowledge, skills and contributions willingly with associates.
  • Assures current knowledge and competence through educational activities. Seeks clinical/technical experience relevant to role responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of basic infection control standards relating to patient and equipment including electrodes.
  • Keeps equipment clean and in proper working order. Knowledge of appropriate calibrations and how to make adjustments. Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems and correct them or report to BioMed promptly.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills with patients, patient families, lab staff and other members of the healthcare team.
  • Consults with various health care providers in a timely manner. Suggest appropriate referrals to assure continuity of care and timely interventions.
  • Working knowledge of the differences in techniques and treatment modalities performed on patients of varying ages from adolescent thru geriatric.
  • Provides effective education to patients and their family.

Qualifications

Requirements:

Education requirements: High school graduate. Successful completion of an AMA approved school for Respiratory Care, EEG, or related health sciences program with an emphasis in sleep technology.

Work experience requirements: A minimum of 6 months experience performing sleep studies and CPAP/BiPAP titration preferred.

Required licenses/ certifications/courses Non-respiratory care practitioners must show successful completion of A-STEP. RCP must hold current S.C. Respiratory Care Practitioner License. All others must complete A-Step program. RPSGT, CPSGT, or SDS credential preferred within 2 years of hire. BLS certification by the AHA required.
