Job Description

The Head of Procurement leads all strategic sourcing, contracting, and supplier relationship management for Apex Clean Energy's onshore wind, solar, and battery energy storage (BESS) projects across the U.S. This role is responsible for developing and executing procurement strategies that optimize cost, quality, schedule, and risk while ensuring reliable equipment supply and strong partnerships with OEMs, integrators, and logistics providers.

The Head of Procurement works closely with Engineering, Construction, Development, Project Management, Finance, Legal, and Operations to align procurement activities with Apex's growing and long-term growth objectives.

Qualifications

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and execute integrated procurement strategies covering onshore wind, solar, and BESS projects across the Apex Clean Energy portfolio.
  • Lead and mentor a team of procurement professionals responsible for strategic sourcing, contracting, equipment logistics, and commercial execution.
  • Establish procurement governance frameworks aligned with Apex's sustainability principles, compliance obligations, and U.S. content requirements.
  • Partner closely with the EVP, Engineering & Construction to align procurement initiatives with company growth objectives and construction schedules.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional leaders in Development, Project Management, Finance, Legal, and Operations to forecast demand and align sourcing with project pipelines.

Wind Turbine Procurement

  • Develop and manage Wind Turbine Supply Agreements (TSAs) with major OEMs for Apex's onshore projects.
  • Drive competitive sourcing processes addressing turbine pricing, warranty structure, logistics, performance guarantees, and serial defect risk.
  • Track market developments in turbine technology, supply availability, and domestic assembly initiatives.
  • Coordinate with Engineering and Construction to align technical specifications, site layouts, and delivery needs.

Solar Equipment Procurement

  • Lead sourcing and contracting efforts for solar modules, inverters, and tracker systems for Apex's U.S. solar projects.
  • Manage category strategies that address supply volatility, trade compliance (AD/CVD, UFLPA, domestic content), and technology qualification.
  • Negotiate terms related to warranty performance, delivery schedules, degradation guarantees, and logistics.
  • Drive supplier diversification while maintaining strong relationships with Tier 1 manufacturers and EPC partners.

Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Procurement

  • Lead sourcing and negotiation forbattery energy storage systems (BESS), covering both standalone and hybrid wind-solar-plus-storage projects.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with battery OEMs, integrators, and system technology providers to secure competitive pricing and reliable delivery.
  • Negotiate commercial terms for BESS procurement including capacity warranties, round-trip efficiency guarantees, augmentation provisions, and service agreements.
  • Ensure supplier compliance with U.S. safety and import standards, as well as Inflation Reduction Act domestic content provisions.
  • Partner with the engineering and grid integration teams to align technical specifications, performance requirements, and delivery logistics.
  • Monitor BESS market trends, supply chain developments, and technology maturation to inform Apex's procurement strategy.

Commercial Execution & Risk Management

  • Lead contract negotiation for all major equipment-wind turbines, solar panels, inverters, BESS systems, and long-term services-ensuring optimal commercial outcomes and balanced risk allocation.
  • Collaborate with Legal to draft and finalize supply and service agreements that meet lender, tax equity, and owner requirements.
  • Maintain supplier performance metrics and risk registers covering market exposure, delivery assurance, and warranty compliance.
  • Coordinate with Finance and Project Controls to manage procurement budgets, forecasts, and cash flow alignment.

Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Support Development by providing current market intelligence on equipment pricing, lead times, and supply chain conditions.
  • Work with Project Management to align delivery schedules and logistics with project construction milestones.
  • Facilitate supplier engineering support for technical feasibility reviews, product integration, and quality assurance.
  • Represent Apex in major supplier partnership discussions and at renewable energy industry forums.

Process & Systems

  • Enhance Apex's procurement tools and systems for contract management, supplier qualification, and reporting.
  • Standardize templates for RFPs, supply contracts, and NDAs to streamline procurement consistency.
  • Use analytics and performance data to identify cost savings, efficiencies, and supplier performance trends.

Champion process improvement and digitalization across the procurement

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, Business, or a related field (required).
  • MBA or advanced degree preferred.

Experience

  • 10+ years of progressive procurement or supply chain experience.
  • Minimum 5 years in renewable energy procurement, with direct experience in wind, solar, and BESS equipment.
  • Proven success negotiating Wind Turbine Supply Agreements and large-scale energy equipment contracts.
  • Experience in U.S.-based IPP, developer, or EPC environments focused on utility-scale projects.
  • Demonstrated people leadership and team development experience.

Work Environment:

Works primarily traditional office hours in an indoor office environment. Flexible work hours allowed when work duties and business operations permit.
