Overview

The Project Construction Specialist for Engineering/Design delivers advanced civil engineering expertise across a diverse portfolio of projects. This role supports both design and fabrication activities within shop operations, ensuring all work meets structural integrity requirements and adheres to applicable standards, codes, and regulations. Key responsibilities include preparing, reviewing, and validating shop drawings developed from engineering designs. The specialist ensures these drawings are precise, fabrication-ready, and aligned with project objectives, enabling efficient and accurate production. In addition to technical duties, the Project Construction Specialist provides essential leadership in departmental training and development. This includes guiding the onboarding of new team members and playing a central role in creating, enhancing, and delivering training programs that strengthen departmental capabilities. Through these combined functions, the Project Construction Specialist is a vital contributor to the delivery of safe, reliable, and high-quality project solutions.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate technical proficiency in interpreting civil, electrical, and mechanical project scopes to define foundational fabrication requirements.
  • Prepare, review, and finalize detailed engineering calculations, design documentation, technical drawings, specifications, and advanced planning materials, including budgeting inputs and proposal submissions.
  • Lead departmental training initiatives for Local 1 and Local 2 union designers and new team members while fostering a culture of professionalism, integrity, engagement, teamwork, diversity, and inclusion; provide guidance to first line supervisors and share performance observations to the Construction Manager to support staff development.
  • Assess engineering designs for constructability and collaborate with the Engineer of Record to develop comprehensive fabrication shop drawings, utilizing Autodesk, Trimble, or equivalent engineering software to produce precise, fabrication ready deliverables.
  • Champion safety and environmental compliance by implementing Company EH&S programs, integrating Human Performance Improvement principles, promoting a Zero Accident Culture, and ensuring strict adherence to safe work practices, environmental protections, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage project costs by tracking estimated versus actual labor hours, monitoring expenditures for labor, materials, supplies, and equipment, and generating or overseeing work orders for expense, capital, and retirement accounts using systems such as MAXIMO.
  • Coordinate field meetings with engineering and operations personnel as needed to ensure effective project execution.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of project scheduling, machine and fabrication shop operations, and construction practices.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Master's Degree 5 years work experience in the Engineering field related to the Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Construction and associated equipment.
  • Bachelor's Degree 3 years work experience in the Engineering field related to the Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Construction and associated equipment.
  • Associate's Degree 2 years work experience in the Engineering field related to the Civil, Mechanical or Electrical Construction and associated equipment.
Relevant Work Experience
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and analyze tasks to develop detailed estimates and schedules for construction projects, required.
  • Working knowledge of all applicable codes such as ACI, AISC, NESC, ASCE, NYC Building Code, etc. required.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team to make sound technical and business decisions, required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, required.
  • Well organized, able to balance priorities, handle multiple assignments, develop a strategic plan and take decisive action to meet deadlines, required.
  • Experience interacting with stakeholders, both internal and external to the Company during normal and emergency conditions, preferred.
  • Work experience in the Engineering field related to the Electric, Gas and Steam systems and associated equipment, preferred.
  • Experience and knowledge of construction work associated with facilities such as Substations and or Generating Stations, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications

Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
