The Finance & Budget Payroll Analyst performs functions related to the processing of payroll for the university's 26,000 employees in accordance with the provisions of The University of Arizona, ADOA, and ABOR policies and procedures and local, state, and federal laws. Payroll Analysts provide information, guidance, and assistance on payroll processing to campus units, faculty, staff, and students and make independent judgments within established limits with some technical processing responsibilities. The Payroll Analysts ensure that the University is effectively managing it's financial resources, acting as stewards of the institution. | Duties & Responsibilities |
Payroll Analysis:
- Researches, analyzes, and interacts with University units and outside agencies to resolve routine and varied payroll related issues.
- Conducts data reconciliations involving payroll, human resources, and benefits data.
- Researches and resolve routine payroll issues.
- Analyzes daily and biweekly payroll reports for accuracy and makes necessary corrections.
- Works with departments and central units to research various issues and resolves payroll discrepancies and/or employee questions timely and accurately.
Payroll Processing & Maintenance:
- Performs detailed calculations in the preparation, processing, and maintenance of payroll.
- Prepares and reconciles payroll transactions, leave accruals and balances, and qualified tuition reduction forms.
- Computes payroll based on employee tax withholding status and deduction schedules; processes updates upon employee request.
- Modifies payroll system records to reflect changes in employee tax status, direct deposit enrollments, and other payroll-related information.
- Posts and maintains wage assignments, including child support orders, creditor garnishments, and federal and state tax levies.
- Reviews daily and biweekly payroll reports for accuracy; identifies and corrects discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Researches and resolves paycheck issues, including incorrect payments, earnings codes, or account allocations.
Policy, Procedure, and Compliance:
- Assists in the development of new processes and procedures under the direction of senior payroll professionals.
- Participates in the development of new procedures and policies related to payroll operations utilizing knowledge of university, state, and federal policies and regulations.
- Processes payroll transactions in compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, including tax laws, wage and hour laws and other payroll-related regulations.
- Keeps informed of regulations, interpretations, and practices pertaining to payroll functions to maintain accurate processing.
Special Projects & Assignments:
- Contributes to the overall success of the department by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned, acting as a back-up for other positions as needed, maintaining high levels of accuracy, maintaining a professional demeanor and appropriate levels of confidentiality, and providing excellent customer service.
- Participates in special projects and campus initiatives; under the direction of senior payroll professionals; assists Payroll Management by providing data and information related to updates, system modifications, and upgrades.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
- Knowledge of payroll administration, procedures, and systems; and federal, state, and local laws related to the payroll industry.
- Ability to provide effective customer service.

- Ability to organize and coordinate projects.
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
- Knowledge of University systems and tools, and ability to operate them.

| Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
- 1 year of relevant work experience required.

| Preferred Qualifications |
- Five years of progressively responsible experience in a payroll-related position.
- Experience with a paperless transactional record retention environment and/or imaging system.
- Experience in the analysis and improvement of policies and procedures.
- Experience working in a higher education environment.
- Experience working with PeopleSoft Applications.

In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), each year the University of Arizona releases an Annual Security Report (ASR) for each of the University's campuses.Thesereports disclose information including Clery crime statistics for the previous three calendar years and policies, procedures, and programs the University uses to keep students and employees safe, including how to report crimes or other emergencies and resources for crime victims.
