CHA Consulting, Inc. is seeking a SUE Technician I to join our Survey Geospatial Team in Columbia, SC, where you'll play a key role in subsurface utility investigations across diverse field locations. This entry-level opportunity blends technical learning with on-site fieldwork, giving you the chance to gather utility data using state-of-the-art equipment and contribute to accurate maps and records that keep communities moving.



What You'll Do:

    Support daily field operations by preparing, organizing, and maintaining SUE equipment while following all safety standards
  • Work alongside experienced technicians to learn and perform underground utility locating using tools such as GPR, electromagnetic locating devices, and vacuum excavation
  • Assist with utility data collection, basic field sketches, and quality checks to ensure accurate documentation for project teams
  • Travel to local project sites as needed and operate company vehicles in accordance with company policies


What You Bring:

  • High school diploma required; Associate's or Bachelor's in Civil or Construction Engineering or a related discipline preferred
  • No experience required; prior internships or applicable coursework preferred
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn about the SUE industry and ability to work in a team environment
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication with a professional demeanor when interacting with staff and the public
  • Ability to meet client-driven schedules, work in various weather conditions, and perform physical tasks such as walking uneven terrain and occasional lifting
  • Professional demeanor when interacting with staff and the public
  • Experience using electromagnetic pipe and cable locating equipment for designation of subsurface utilities preferred
  • Experience with DOT, municipal, and/or public utility projects is a plus
  • SUE experience on South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) and other transportation projects is a plus
  • Working knowledge of Ground Penetrating Radar and vacuum excavation is a plus
  • Surveying and/or drafting experience is a plus
  • Experience with engineering, computational, and modeling software (AutoCAD, MicroStation, etc.) is a plus

Salary Range:

$26.50 - $27.50

Salary is based on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training, and fair market evaluation based on industry standards.
