Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research ( OVCR) oversees, develops, supports, and grows UNC-Chapel Hill's $1 billion research enterprise. The offices reporting to the OVCR set strategic priorities for research, manage proposals and awards, provide research infrastructure, identify funding opportunities, develop research teams and partnerships, oversee regulatory compliance, and communicate the impact and value of the University's research enterprise. The OVCR enables research endeavors for faculty, students, and scholars; encourages interdisciplinary research collaboration across campus; and fosters expansion and diversification of the University's sponsored research portfolio by collaborating with foundations, federal agencies, corporations, and the state and federal governments. The Vice Chancellor for Research also oversees multiple pan-University, multidisciplinary research centers and institutes.
Position Summary
The University Animal Research Operations Analyst serves as a senior analytical and strategic support role for the institution's animal research program, with responsibility for evaluating and improving the operational, financial, and compliance-related performance of a highly regulated research enterprise. This position provides advanced analysis of workflows, staffing and financial models, facility utilization, and regulatory impacts to support efficient, sustainable, and compliant animal research operations while upholding the highest standards of animal welfare.

Operating with a high degree of independence, the Analyst synthesizes complex data from multiple functional areas and translates findings into actionable recommendations for senior leadership. The role partners closely with veterinary leadership, research administration, compliance offices ( IACUC, EH&S), facilities, and finance to inform strategic planning, resource allocation, and long-term program sustainability across the institution.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or professional-level background in sponsored research administration, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Advanced analytical and quantitative skills, including the ability to analyze complex, multi-source datasets and develop meaningful performance metrics.
- Significant progressively responsible experience in operational analysis, program evaluation, or financial analysis within a complex, regulated environment.
- Demonstrated experience supporting decision-making for leadership through data-driven analysis and recommendations.
- Strong operational acumen, including understanding of cost drivers, staffing models, and resource utilization.
- Ability to clearly communicate complex analyses and recommendations to senior leaders and diverse stakeholder groups.
- Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple initiatives with competing priorities.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and handle sensitive or confidential information.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
- Experience with institutional benchmarking, peer analysis, and best-practice assessments.
- Advanced proficiency with data visualization, financial modeling, or enterprise reporting tools.
- Experience supporting strategic planning, change management, or enterprise-wide operational improvement initiatives.
