Job Summary

The Associate Director of Operations (Ops) plans and oversees the application of staff and technical resources of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) in support of ongoing day-to-day operations. This role works closely with SPD managers and external stakeholders as necessary to ensure operational efficiency, patient safety, and staff morale. The associate director of Operations promotes the development of a motivated and cohesive team and supports educational strategies to enhance staff performance in processing practices and service delivery, as well as growth and developmental opportunities.

The associate director will help to oversee sterile processing functions at all UCSF SPD sites and will align operations with the Mission, Vision, and Values of UCSF Health, organizational goals, and strategic initiatives. The associate director assists in the development of performance improvement goals and collaborates with the system director and associate director of quality, education, and asset planning to assess and develop and facilitate teamwork, optimal scheduling practices, fulfillment of educational needs, staff recognition, enhanced patient safety, operational efficiencies, and communication. The associate director also assists in the development of processes to ensure instrumentation is available for surgeries and that instruments are returned to SPD in optimal condition, monitors services provided, and collaborates in developing methods to improve utilization and efficiency.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $143,900 - $215,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Sterile Processing Departments at UCSF provide reprocessing services surgical instruments and devices for use in surgical suites in which complex surgery is performed, in specialty clinics, and other procedural areas. Specialty instrumentation includes but is not limited to: General surgery, GU, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Maxillofacial, Neurosurgery including stereotactic procedures, Cardiothoracic, Transplant, Orthopedic, Plastics, and ENT.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 3-5 years of progressive leadership / management in development and sterile processing
  • Minimum of five (5) years of practical experience in sterile processing activities or appropriate certification that reflects a level of competency
  • Certification in Sterile processing CRCST (HSPA) or CSPDT (CBSPD)
  • Experience as a SPD tech in a clinical setting with specific knowledge of AAMI standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of sterile processing operations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of human resources management and staff development. Ability to manage staff with diverse skills and expertise.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills to identify problems then determine and implement appropriate, effective solutions.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills with the ability to present complex information to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective working relationships with senior management and staff.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience with procurement, supply chain management, financial & budget management.
  • Proficient with MS Windows applications and surgery scheduling systems. Ability to produce presentations and comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to implement process improvement strategies and quality initiatives.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fiscal management including budget development.
  • Knowledge of procurement and supply chain management.
  • Relevant mixture of additional certifications in sterile processing:
    • Instrument management - CIS (HSPA) or CSIS (CBSPD)
    • Endoscope processing - CER (HSPA) or CFER (CBSPD)
    • SPD Leadership - CHL (HSPA) or CSPM (CBSPD); CASSPT (CBSPD)

License/Certification


  • Certification in Sterile processing CRCST (HSPA) or CSPDT (CBSPD)
