DESCRIPTION

The Division of Gastroenterology in the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego aims to conduct cutting-edge research in digestive diseases and to promote scholarly investigations, teaching, service and health leadership and training.

The General Gastroenterology Nurse Practitioner will provide care for patients with Advanced Endoscopy and general Gastroenterology (GI) related conditions. Provides comprehensive history and physical exams, orders and reviews diagnostic tests, formulates plans of care, works with the Advanced Endoscopy team & General Gastroenterology team along with other providers, and triages telephone calls, electronic messages (e.g. Epic MyChart) and outpatient physician referrals.

Primarily, the Nurse Practitioner will see Advanced Endoscopy clinic patients, primarily new visits, which will primarily come from the external referral pool. Assists the Advanced Endoscopy team with triaging these referrals and helps reduce patient wait times.

The Nurse Practitioner may see these patients either in an Expeditated Care Clinic (ECC) format or as formal new consults. Assists in coverage for General GI ECC, as needed. Responsible for seeing any urgent post-procedure advanced patients. The Nurse Practitioner will not be responsible for inpatient care, but may assist with certain physician orders. Other duties assigned as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.

  • California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification.

  • Current Nurse Practitioner Specialty Certification in an aligned specialty with the practice area from one of the following Nursing Boards: AANP, ANCC, NCC, PNCB, AACN.

  • BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within 6 months of hire date.

  • Minimum of one (1) year of licensed NP experience working in Gastroenterology.

  • Proficiency in documentation of patient conditions and outcomes.

  • Proven knowledge of common diagnostic tests, exams and procedures, e.g., laboratory blood tests, x-rays, EKG's, biopsies and GI endoscopies.

  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory values and skill in identifying deviations.

  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of PCIS/Epic for retrieval of patient data (PCIS/Epic preferred).

  • Demonstrated experience working in a clinical research environment. Ability to identify potential clinical trials patients.

  • Demonstrated experience providing patient education and counseling and developing and implementing long and short range treatment plans.

  • Knowledge of study formats, with the ability to edit charts and resolve inconsistencies.

  • Skill in patient interviewing, obtaining a concise medical history and acquiring pertinent data.

  • Demonstrated experience in research techniques, such as following a protocol, and in collecting all data precisely.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • State of California Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number (if administering medicine to patients).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of FDA and drug study requirements.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Must be willing to work flexible, variable hours with the ability to change schedule on short notice, based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs.

Some weekend work will be required. Overtime required as needed. No on call work is required

Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.

Current UCSD NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval by Health Human Resources and the UCSD Advanced Practice Council.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $167,687 - $234,649 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $80.31 - $112.38

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
