Candidates that live within 50 miles from the workplace, will work a hybrid schedule of onsite (Greenwich Drive, San Diego) 3 days a week and remote 2 days a week.

DESCRIPTION

UC San Diego Health's Strategy Office is seeking an experienced Business Intelligence Developer to lead our data analytics function that supports system-level strategy development. In this role, you'll own the design and execution of advanced analytics that leverage health care claims, demographic data, utilization trends, and internal operational data to analyze market dynamics, forecast demand, and uncover strategic opportunities. This position offers a unique opportunity to help guide the direction of San Diego's leading health system, by providing the strategic support to influence senior leadership in data-driven business decision-making.

The ideal candidate will have advanced skills in Epic/Clarity and SQL, and will possess problem-solving skills that enable creative solutions in data cleansing, validation, and analysis. They will have strong technical aptitude with a strategic mindset, facilitating the translation of complex data into insights and narratives that guide strategic planning and enterprise-wide initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic analytics projects across a broad range of initiatives, including facility planning, market expansion, and service line planning
  • Use statistical modeling, predictive analytics, and data visualization to identify trends, patterns, and actionable insights from multiple data sources (e.g., EHRs, market data)
  • Drive innovation in storytelling by translating complex findings into clear, concise, and compelling visual narratives that are executive-ready
  • Collaborate across departments, including strategy management, IT, operations, finance, marketing, and executive leadership, to understand business needs and deliver tailored solutions
  • Ensure data quality, documentation, and governance practices to maintain trust and transparency in strategic analyses
  • Maintain and optimize key datasets within the department, including data sourced from HCAI, Epic/Clarity, Trilliant Health, Esri, etc.
  • Conduct ad hoc analyses to address specific business questions or support special projects
  • Track project milestones and deliverables, identifying risks, and implementing solutions to maintain project momentum and timely execution of deliverables
  • Mentor colleagues and provide technical guidance
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Nine (9) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus five (5) years of related experience/training.

  • Experience and proven success in knowledge of business intelligence functions, advanced analytics, industry standards and best practices.

  • Advanced knowledge and skill in internal databases, BI applications, tools, and systems.

  • Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to manage highly-complex information, assess problems, and develop effective solutions.

  • Advanced organizational and project management skills.

  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex information in a clear, concise manner. Ability to produce and deliver presentations to diverse audiences.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with managers, professional and technical staff.

  • Ability to serve as an advanced technical leader providing advice, counsel, and analysis on business intelligence issues.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced proficiency in SQL.

  • Experience in Epic/Clarity or similar EHR.

  • Expertise in BI and visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).

  • Experience in data analysis or business intelligence within a hospital or large health care system strongly preferred.

  • Experience delivering analytical insights in a business or strategic context.

  • High attention to detail, excellent critical thinking abilities, and an understanding of health care data and coding principles (e.g., CPT, ICD-10, MS-DRG).

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $97,200 - $182,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $46.55 - $87.16

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
