Job Summary: The Landscape Architect III is responsible for the planning, designing, construction, and inspection of parks and related facilities to ensure compliance with long-range plans and departmental strategies. As part of the Parks Planning Division, this position also works to preserve and enhance department assets, ensure quality service, as well as product delivery.



Essential Responsibilities:



  • Lead the design, construction, review, and implementation of park projects and related facilities by preparing plans, drawings, specifications, and estimates. Define scopes, design parameters, evaluate land transactions, and attend and lead hearing and informational meetings.
  • Assist in capital and long-range planning. Advance the implementation of plans, policies, and procedures. Analyze systemwide assets using geographic information systems.
  • Oversee contractor work to ensure compliance with approved design and budget. Prepare narratives, statistical and legislative reports, permits, grants, easements, and exhibits.
  • Participate on special project teams, community outreach efforts, and marketing and communication efforts.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.



Minimum Requirements:



  • Authorized to work in the United States.
  • Possession of a valid United States Driver's License at the time of application, able to obtain a valid Wisconsin Driver's License within 6 months of hire.


  • Must be able to meet at least one of the following education and experience requirements:

    • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Landscape Architecture and two (2) or more years of practical experience in landscape architecture of a character satisfactory to the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services examining board (DSPS).
    • High School Diploma, GED equivalent, or Bachelor's Degree or higher in a field outside Landscape Architecture and seven (7) or more years of training and experience in the practice of landscape architecture. The seven (7) years of training and experience must include two (2) or more years of courses in landscape architecture approved by DSPS and four (4) years of practical experience in landscape architecture acceptable to DSPS.


  • Professional Landscape Architect license in any US state at the time of application, must be able to obtain a Wisconsin license within 6 months of employment.



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience with GIS (Geographic Information System).
  • Experience in Construction Management.
  • Possession of Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) certification.
  • Possession of a Wisconsin Professional Landscape Architect license.
