STATE AFFAIRS MANAGER

What you'll do.

The State Affairs Manager leads the AAN's state advocacy agenda, driving strategic policy goals across all fifty states. This role serves as a key connector-acting as the liaison to the State Policy Workgroup and aligning state strategy with the Advocacy Committee. The Manager fosters strong partnerships with members, neurosocieties, state medical societies, legislative staff, and patients to advance the AAN's advocacy priorities. They also serve as the primary liaison to state neurological and medical societies and guide state policy staff, ensuring cohesive, impactful, and forward-thinking state advocacy efforts.

What we look for.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Law, Communications, Government Relations, or related field is required.
  • Master's degree is preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in one or more of the following: government relations, state-level policy, state chapter management, or advocacy work is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to uphold the AAN's values is required.
  • Strong written, oral, and digital communication skills; ability to effectively communicate in a concise and persuasive manner is required.
  • Considerable knowledge of policy formulation within a political setting is required.
  • Strong time-management skills and ability to work effectively and efficiently on multiple tasks under tight deadlines is required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Office, specifically in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.
  • Ability to represent association and present to a variety of external audiences and stakeholders
  • Ability to speak in front of large audience is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with all internal and external stakeholders from diverse backgrounds at all levels of the organization is required.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills sufficient to provide prompt, courteous and accurate information to internal and external customers in person, on the phone and through written and electronic correspondence is required.
  • Association experience is preferred.
  • Experience working with healthcare association volunteers is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Quorum or similar government relations software is preferred.

Relevant education and/or experience exceeding the required qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Travel Requirements: Frequent travel required - up to 20%. Ability to travel occasionally to remote locations.

Location: Washington DC or Minneapolis, MNand is identified as hybrid (required to work in the office with the ability to work remotely part of the week).

Schedule: Frequent evening and weekends required.
