Who we are and what we do:

The Tennessee Department of Correction operates and oversees 14 adult prisons across the state, housing some 21,000 offenders. In the community, TDOC supervises 79,000 offenders on probation, parole, or community corrections. The department operates 44 probation/parole offices in 13 districts across the state.

How you make a difference in this role:

The Correctional Tactical Officer 1 position is assigned to the Special Operations Unit (SOU), which is the specialized tactical response division of the TDOC. The Tactical Officer 1 is an operator position on Strike Force (SF), which is the states only full-time rapid response tactical unit. This position is based out of Nashville, Tennessee, with significant travel throughout middle, east, and west Tennessee.

Job Overview:

The Correctional Tactical Officer 1 acts as a representative of the Special Operations Unit Director and the Tennessee Department of Correction in performing the important and confidential duties that involve contact work with law enforcement, court appearances, community leaders, offenders, their families, victims, and the general public. This position is expected to be a resource in providing support for staff at all levels of the Tennessee Department of Correction.

Key Responsibilities:

The TO1 is responsible for conducting day-to-day operations within SF, which includes emergency call-outs (24-7), high-risk, transports, extraditions, intelligence based prison search operations, contraband interdiction operations, demonstration control (riots, civil protests), supplying specialized instruction to the SOU, dignitary protection, court security and assisting with outside law enforcement agencies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires successful completion of a physical fitness test.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or an accredited GED
  • No criminal felony conviction
  • Successful completion of the TDOC firearms qualification course required and must be able to carry a weapon while on duty.

Work experience:

  • 1 year of experience with offenders/detainees in the capacity of a police, correction, or probation/parole officer. Or applicable military experience that includes military policing, detainee assignments or at least 1 year in an active duty status with an honorable discharge (DD-214).
  • All applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, 21 years of age, and possess a valid Tennessee drivers license at the time of hire.
  • Applicant must successfully pass a structured interview, meet medical and psychological qualifications.
  • Applicants must be able to be on call 24 hours / 7 days a week; nights / weekends / holidays / overnight stays and must be a proficient report writer, proficient in Microsoft Office.
