Job Overview

Perioperative Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are integral members of the surgical care team, working in collaboration with anesthesiology, surgery, nursing, and other professionals to manage pre-surgical care. In this role, APPs complete histories and physicals for surgical candidates, coordinate with surgical and anesthesia teams, and address preoperative needs. Responsibilities include managing chronic and acute conditions, facilitating consultations, promoting education, contributing to quality and scholarly efforts, supporting fiscal stewardship, and advancing professional development.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Family-Centered Care:
    • Provides age-specific and culturally sensitive care that centers on the patient and family.
    • Advocates for the needs, values, and preferences of the patient, family, and caregivers.
    • Promotes patient and family self-management through education and engagement.
  • Teamwork and Collaboration:
    • Communicates and documents clearly with care team members to ensure integrated pediatric care.
    • Delegates monitoring, assessment, and interventions based on patient needs and caregiver scope of practice and ensures appropriate follow-through.
    • Coordinates referrals and discusses recommendations with patients, families, and caregivers.
  • Quality and Safety:
    • Participates in quality improvement and research efforts to improve care processes and outcomes.
    • Applies evidence-based practice and critical thinking to clinical decision-making.
    • Maintains awareness of and contributes to departmental safety protocols and reporting.
    • Maintains clinical competence through continuing education, licensure requirements, and appropriate use of decision-support tools.
    • Uses targeted interventions and patient/family education to support safety and health promotion.
  • Leadership and Professionalism:
    • Provides leadership in managing patient care for optimal quality and cost-effectiveness.
    • Models professionalism in communication, conduct, and collaboration.
    • Sets and pursues developmental goals based on feedback, appraisal, and peer review.
    • Engages in lifelong learning to improve clinical skills and role performance.
    • Serves as a preceptor, mentor, and role model to others in the clinical setting.
    • Shares expertise and learning to support the growth of peers and team members.
    • Participates in local and hospital-wide committees or initiatives to advance APRN practice, policy, or quality of care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degrees
    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
    • Master's Degree Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)
  • Experience
    • Three (3) years combined experience as RN or PNP
  • Licenses & Certifications
    • Registered Nurse (RN) License
    • Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)
    • Primary Care, Acute Care, or Dual Acute/Primary Care certification
    • BLS/CPR from the American Heart Association required
    • Prescriptive Authority
    • DEA
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred
