About the Job
Leader in the day-to-day operations management and the long-term planning of the Comparative Medicine Services Core (CMSC). A trusted advisor and advocate, with the ability to influence change and invest in CMSC's mission.

What you will do

  • Leads day-to-day operations, specialized work performed & assures compliance.
  • May direct all technical and non-technical personnel including unique training.
  • Manages personnel through encouraging a collegial and supportive team atmosphere and effective conflict resolution.
  • Motivates team members, delegates effectively, and manages performance.
  • In collaboration with the study veterinarian, lab manager, and research support specialists, oversees the clinical care of animals assigned to CMSC studies.
  • Drafts and reviews study protocols, standard operating procedures, and documentation requirements for study-related activities.
  • Maintains protocols necessary for studies, including Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and Institutional Biosafety Committee protocols.
  • Works with CHOP Principal investigators, study directors, and external sponsors or collaborators on study design and implementation.
  • Creates budgets necessary for grant submissions and studies.
  • Creates and manages the budget for the core, does monthly billing, and works with necessary departments within CHOP to ensure financial stewardship.
  • Meets with study sponsors on a regular basis.
  • Works closely with Department of Veterinary Resources on colony management and health surveillance.
  • Works closely and collaborates with DVR and external regulatory bodies on development of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) compliant facility.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Licensed Veterinarian - Authorized State Board of Veterinary Medicine - upon hire - Preferred and
  • Licensed Veterinarian - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Preferred and
  • American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) Board Certification - American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) - upon hire - Preferred

Education

  • Doctorate Required
  • Doctorate DVM, VMD, or equivalent Preferred
  • Doctorate Diplomate of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine Preferred

Experience

  • At least five (5) years of specialized experience in area of expertise Required
  • At least twelve (12) years of specialized experience in area of expertise Preferred
  • At least seven (7) years of leadership, management, or supervisory experience Preferred
  • At least five (5) years of laboratory animal medicine experience Required
  • At least five (5) years of experience in a GLP-compliant environment Preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent leadership skills

  • Ability to collaborate with stakeholders at all levels
  • Ability to accept and provide feedback in a constructive manner
  • Ability to convey complex or technical information in an easy-to-understand manner
