Chief Engineer - JLL

What this job involves

As a Chief Engineer, you'll oversee the complete maintenance and continuous operation of all building systems, with a strong emphasis on hands-on technical work. You'll develop and implement comprehensive maintenance programs covering preventive, predictive, and reactive procedures while ensuring the highest standards of safety and compliance. This role requires technical expertise across multiple disciplines, particularly HVAC systems, along with skills in plumbing, electrical work, and general building maintenance.

You'll collaborate closely with facility managers to meet financial targets, manage budgets, and execute major projects according to industry best practices. The position involves supervising and mentoring maintenance staff while serving as a technical leader and role model for the team. Critical facilities, laboratory environments, and high-rise buildings are key focus areas where you'll ensure optimal performance and safety.

What your day-to-day will look like

  • Conduct building rounds, maintaining detailed engineering logs and data sheets, and efficiently planning work using CMMS systems.
  • Perform hands-on maintenance and troubleshooting across building systems, working at heights, in varying temperature conditions, and handling equipment up to 50 pounds safely.
  • Teach and mentoring team members through hands-on demonstration, ensuring all staff understand and follow standard operating procedures for critical infrastructure.
  • Administrative duties include maintaining infrastructure and compliance documentation, managing the JLL Client Assurance Program (JCAP), and coordinating with contractors and vendors.
  • The role requires 24-hour on-call availability with the expectation of arriving on-site within 45 minutes for emergencies. You'll work in all weather conditions and may travel between multiple buildings or sites as needed. Occasional overtime and flexible scheduling are standard expectations.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in an engineering discipline or equivalent work experience, along with 5+ years of facility-related work experience including customer service, leadership, and supervisory responsibilities.
  • Universal Technician certification for CFCs is mandatory.
  • Technical expertise must include HVAC maintenance and troubleshooting capabilities, with multi-skilled competency in pipe fitting/plumbing and electrical work. Experience in critical facilities, laboratory environments, and high-rise buildings is essential.
  • Strong people management and team leadership skills are required, as supervisory responsibilities will be shared with the assigned Facility Manager.
  • You must demonstrate the ability to work independently and as part of a team while making sound business decisions based on individual situations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel) is required, along with the ability to effectively use computers, smartphones, and navigate multiple email accounts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with varying levels of staff, contractors, vendors, and customers are essential.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with CMMS systems, particularly Corrigo knowledge, is highly valued for maintaining KPI requirements effectively.
  • General finance and budget knowledge to assist Facility Managers would be beneficial.
  • Previous experience in teaching and mentoring roles, particularly through hands-on demonstration methods, is preferred.
  • Candidates with additional certifications or specialized training in critical building systems, safety programs, or project management would be advantageous for this role.
