Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated Mechanical/Mechatronic Engineering Co-op to support the extension and enhancement of the existing Dozer table top test rig and help with development and testing of the products. This is a motion control system used to evaluate calculated instructions to a bull dozer. The core mission of this role is to "close the loop" by implementing sensing capabilities. This capability is crucial for evaluating Dozer Push Plan effectiveness before full scale testing.

This internship will provide hands-on experience using technical skills in a professional, agile and team environment.

This co-op will begin in Kennesaw, GA and relocate to Westminster, CO during the Co-Op program. Candidates must be willing to relocate.

Key Responsibilities

The co-op candidate will be responsible for component research and hands-on assistance in all aspects of the test system hardware and software development. Expectations include researching alternatives, candidate selection, candidate evaluation, and integrated testing. Specific responsibilities include:

Research and Hardware Selection
  • Research ways to measure surfaces accurately, focusing on short-range sensing technology, such as Laser, to achieve millimeter (mm) precision.

  • Preliminary research examples include Micro-Epsilon displacement sensors (e.g., optoNCDT 1220), Banner laser gauging sensors (e.g., LE250 and LE550), and 3DMakerPro Model Scanners.

  • Make a hardware recommendation for a suitable scanning system for integration into the test system.

System Integration and Assembly

  • Design a mounting system for the new sensor hardware onto the existing Sandbox.

  • Create custom bracketry as needed for integration. The intern will deal with the mechanical design of motor bracketry, mounts, cabling, and clearances.

  • Assist in rapid prototyping, potentially including 3D Printing, CNC Router, or Electronic circuits.

Scripting and Data Collection

  • Design a data collection system to interface with the selected laser scanning hardware.

  • Write interface scripts and programs to gather laser ranging data.

  • The data system must be capable of mapping the resulting surface to form Digital Terrain Models.

Testing and Evaluation

  • Run tests in the upgraded Dozer table top test rig.

  • Execute performance measures and suggest new approaches to system test plans.

  • Evaluate results derived from the new sensing system.

  • Test and analyze new earthmoving concepts and Dozer clearing exercises.

  • Report out findings and provide quality feedback to the broader team.

Skills & Experience Required
  • Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Robotics Engineering are disciplines applicable to this position.

  • Proficiency in coding is required, particularly experience with languages such as C#, C++, Matlab, or Python.

  • CAD experience to create custom bracketry and kitting.

  • Experience with rapid prototyping (3D Printing, CNC Router, Electronic circuits).

  • A positive attitude with a "can-do" willingness to learn, and the ability to collaborate in a team environment.

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and interpersonal). Ability to document approaches and results. Ability to make continuous progress toward a timeline.

Skills & Experience Preferred
  • Experience or knowledge related to Lidar (Laser scanning) or Laser Ranging Systems

  • Experience in point cloud data processing and tools is preferred.

  • Familiarity with physics, modeling, and simulation

  • Familiarity with robotics, sensing, and control systems

Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Candidates must already possess authorization to work in the United States of America without the need for employer sponsorship.
