Senior Mechanical Engineer

PSI Quantum
$150,000-$185,000 USD
United States, California, Milpitas
Nov 23, 2025

PsiQuantum'smission is to build the first useful quantum computers-machines capable of delivering the breakthroughs the field has long promised. Since our founding in 2016, our singular focus has been to build and deploy million-qubit, fault-tolerant quantum systems.

Quantum computers harness the laws of quantum mechanics to solve problems that even the most advanced supercomputers or AI systems will never reach. Their impact will span energy, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials, and other foundational industries.

Our architecture and approachisbased on silicon photonics. Byleveragingthe advanced semiconductor manufacturing industry-including partners like GlobalFoundries-we use the same high-volume processes that already produce billions of chips for telecom and consumer electronics. Photonics offers natural advantages for scale: photonsdon'tfeel heat, are immune to electromagnetic interference, and integrate with existing cryogenic cooling and standard fiber-optic infrastructure.

In 2024,PsiQuantumannounced government-funded projects to support the build-out of our first utility-scale quantum computers in Brisbane, Australia, and Chicago, Illinois. These initiatives reflect a growing recognition that quantum computing will be strategically and economically defining-and that now is the time to scale.

PsiQuantumalso develops the algorithms and software needed to make these systems commercially valuable. Our application, software, and industry teams work directly with leading Fortune 500 companies-including Lockheed Martin, Mercedes-Benz, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Mitsubishi Chemical-to prepare quantum solutions for real-world impact.

Quantum computing is not an extension of classical computing. Itrepresentsa fundamental shift-and a path to mastering challenges that cannot besolvedany other way. The potential is enormous, and we have a clearpathto make it real.

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer with a strong background in precision tooling, optical alignment, and manufacturing processes. This role requires a highly skilled engineer proficient in SolidWorks, Product Data Management (PDM), and advanced mechanical design principles. The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, development, and implementation of precision mechanical systems for optical alignment applications.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design, development, and optimization of precision mechanical tooling for optical alignment.
  • Utilize SolidWorks and PDM for design creation, modification, and data management.
  • Develop detailed mechanical drawings and 3D models adhering to industry standards.
  • Perform tolerance analysis, material selection, and structural integrity assessments for mechanical designs.
  • Design and integrate motion control systems, including hexapod mechanical systems, for precision alignment applications.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including optical engineers, manufacturing teams, and quality control, to ensure product performance and manufacturability.
  • Drive design reviews, risk assessments, and failure mode effect analysis (FMEA) for mechanical designs.
  • Implement and maintain best practices for document control and version management within PDM.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and design teams.
  • Stay up-to-date with advancements in mechanical design, precision tooling, motion control, and optical alignment technologies.
  • PLC controls selection, wiring, schematics are a plus.
  • Pneumatic systems design and assembly are a plus.

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or demonstrated proficiency in the field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a focus on precision tooling, optical alignment, and motion control.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and PDM is required.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, including CNC machining, 3D printing, and precision assembly.
  • Experience in tolerance analysis, GD&T, and mechanical stress analysis.
  • Proven ability to lead design projects from concept through production.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with optical systems, hexapod mechanical systems, or photonics is a plus.
