About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented GIS Specialist (HR Title= Assistant Staff Geospatial Scientist) to support our Rocky Mountain/Plains sub-region, based in our Denver (Broomfield), CO office.

SWCA's GIS Department consists of over 80 GIS professionals with diverse backgrounds in GIS design, cartography, data management, and more. In this role, you will primarily support Cultural Resource programs in the Great Basin region and collaborate with other SWCA offices across the country.

This is a regular, full-time, hourly position with benefits. The position is associated with the Denver, CO office, and local candidates are strongly preferred. This position may either be fully remote, hybrid, or office based, with particular interest in candidates located in proximity to the Broomfield, CO office.

What you will accomplish

As an Assistant Staff Geospatial Scientist, you will:

  • Collaborate with the GIS Team Lead to prepare web maps for field staff use in Field Maps, post-process and manage field data, report calculations, and create map products using established protocols and templates.
  • Communicate workload and project progress with the team to ensure productivity goals are met and projects are delivered on time and on budget.
  • Contribute to a collaborative and supportive work environment, fostering teamwork across offices and disciplines.
  • Utilize Esri ArcGIS Pro for data management, production/editing, spatial analyses, and efficient creation of high-quality field maps and report figures.
  • Follow data management best practices and provide technical support for mobile platforms such as Esri's Field Maps and Survey123 applications.
  • Create cartographic-quality map products using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
  • Assist in designing, creating, maintaining, and QA/QC of geospatial databases using ArcGIS.

Experience and qualifications for success

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, Cartography, Archaeology, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field with an emphasis in GIS (or GIS certificate).
  • Minimum of one (1) year of professional experience beyond university attendance, including GPS technology, field data collection techniques, data management, and troubleshooting digital files.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro and a working knowledge of cartography and computer mapping, including design principles and map creation procedures in ArcGIS Pro.

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in environmental consulting, especially involving GIS applications in cultural or natural resources management, and experience working with federal land agencies such as USFS, NPS, BLM, BOR, USGS, or similar.
  • Experience completing all GIS aspects of a project, from fieldwork preparations to geospatial analyses, final report maps, and calculations.
  • Proficiency with data transfer, data analysis, data mining, and data inventory using software applications (e.g., Windows Explorer, Excel, Access, Esri ArcGIS).
  • Prior knowledge and experience working with field data collection platforms such as Survey123 and Field Maps.

An employee in this Denver-based position can expect an hourly rate of $23.48/hr. - $30.03/hr.. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
