Overview

DecisionPoint seeks Application Engineers (Tier 2) to provide advanced technical support, troubleshooting, and sustainment for a mission-critical Department of Defense (DoD) enterprise application environment. These roles will support day-to-day operations by diagnosing application-level issues, implementing fixes, and coordinating escalations with Tier 3 engineers and system administrators to ensure operational continuity and compliance with SLAs.

The Application Engineer will play a key role in maintaining the stability, performance, and security of deployed applications, supporting incident resolution, system updates, and user access troubleshooting in accordance with DoD cybersecurity and operational standards.

This position is fully remote.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Application Engineer, Mid (Tier 2) will:

    Provide Tier 2 application support, resolving issues escalated from Tier 1 help desk personnel and coordinating with Tier 3 engineers for complex problems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve application, database, and integration-related issues affecting end users and mission workflows.
  • Support application incident, problem, and change management activities following ITIL-aligned processes.
  • Conduct log analysis, query execution, and performance checks to identify root causes of system disruptions or degraded functionality.
  • Collaborate with developers, cybersecurity personnel, and system administrators to validate patches, releases, and security updates.
  • Perform configuration management and validation for application-level settings and data connections.
  • Support access management and account troubleshooting within secure, role-based environments.
  • Document all findings, resolutions, and technical changes in the ITSM tool (e.g., ServiceNow, Jira, Remedy).
  • Participate in test and deployment support for software updates, ensuring successful implementation with minimal user impact.
  • Maintain awareness of known issues, recurring incidents, and root cause trends to drive proactive solutions.
  • Validate application monitoring and alerting configurations to ensure continuous visibility into system performance.
  • Contribute to knowledge base articles and SOPs, sharing lessons learned and resolutions for recurring incidents.
  • Support after-hours maintenance windows and on-call rotations as needed for critical issue resolution.
  • Adhere to DoD cybersecurity, RMF, and operational security (OPSEC) policies when handling system data and incident information.


Qualifications

Clearance Requirement:

  • Must hold an active Top Secret clearance.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience providing application or system support within a federal or defense IT environment.
  • Demonstrated success troubleshooting and resolving application and data integration issues.
  • Experience with incident management, service operations, and escalation handling across IT service tiers.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Proficiency in Windows and Linux system environments for application support.
  • Familiarity with SQL and database query tools for investigating performance and data access issues.
  • Experience using ITSM systems such as ServiceNow, Jira Service Management, or Remedy.
  • Knowledge of log analysis tools and monitoring platforms such as Splunk, CloudWatch, or ELK Stack.
  • Familiarity with REST APIs, integrations, and middleware troubleshooting.
  • Understanding of DoD cybersecurity compliance requirements, including RMF, STIGs, and account management protocols.
  • Experience supporting cloud-hosted applications within AWS GovCloud or similar IL-classified environments.

Certifications (Preferred):

  • CompTIA Security+ CE or equivalent DoD 8570 certification (required baseline).
  • ITIL v4 Foundation certification (preferred).
  • AWS Certified SysOps Administrator or related certification (preferred).

Skills:

  • Excellent troubleshooting and analytical abilities.
  • Strong communication skills for coordination with end users and technical teams.
  • Detail-oriented documentation and adherence to escalation workflows.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple concurrent tickets in a fast-paced, mission-critical environment.
  • Commitment to service excellence, responsiveness, and operational reliability.
