The Research Scientist III serves as a principal investigator-level scientist responsible for designing, executing, supervising, and reporting advanced research in trauma, hemorrhage, burns, immunomodulation, craniofacial injuries, directed energy health effects, and other key military medicine priorities. This role leads multidisciplinary research teams, ensures regulatory compliance, and contributes to mission-critical innovations for battlefield medicine.

Research Scientist III Responsibilities Include:

  • Design, conduct, and oversee advanced preclinical and translational studies in trauma, shock, wound progression, and critical care.
  • Develop and validate in vivo and in vitro model systems; oversee surgical procedures, animal care, and sample collection in accordance with IACUC, AALAS, and GLP (21 CFR 58) standards.
  • Perform and supervise molecular, cellular, and analytical laboratory techniques (PCR, ELISA, microscopy, HPLC, LC-MS/MS, flow cytometry, imaging technologies).
  • Provide scientific and technical guidance to junior scientists and research associates in experimental design, protocol development, and data analysis.
  • Manage laboratory operations, ensuring compliance with OSHA, DoD, FDA, EPA, and Army safety and quality standards.
  • Author and review research protocols, SOPs, reports, manuscripts, grant applications, and CRADA work statements.
  • Present scientific findings at conferences and represent USAISR research in national and international forums.
  • Maintain Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) documentation and ensure adherence to Quality Assurance Surveillance Plan (QASP) standards.
  • Support regulatory submissions and interface with oversight bodies including IACUC, IRB, FDA, and Army Human Research Protection Office.
  • Serve as a Mission-Essential Scientist during emergencies or elevated FPCON conditions; support extended or on-call hours for live protocols and mission requirements.
  • Provide technical support in blood donor operations, including donor screening, sample processing, and transfusion product management.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Research Scientist III Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested:

  • PhD or doctorate in Microbiology, Immunology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of relevant research experience in trauma, critical care, or related biomedical sciences, with proven ability to lead complex projects and supervise scientific teams.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or equivalent CPR certification (AHA or Red Cross).
  • Expertise in molecular and cellular biology, analytical chemistry, and advanced imaging systems.
  • Strong leadership, mentoring, and project management skills.
  • Excellent technical writing and scientific communication skills.
  • Knowledge of GLP, QMS, ISO 9001, and military or DoD research environments.
  • Commitment to regulatory compliance, safety, and mission readiness.
  • Willingness to comply with government vaccination and biosafety requirements.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal
