WORK COMPLEXITY:

Works on multiple projects as a team member or sometimes as a technical lead or advisor. -
Supports multiple databases of highly complex (complexity defined by database size, technology used, and system feeds and interfaces) with multiple concurrent users, ensuring control, integrity and accessibility of the data.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Project/Work Planning

Plans and organizes database activities regarding reliability, performance monitoring and tuning, security, backup and disaster recovery. -
Participate in long term planning for software and hardware upgrades. -
Works with Project Managers to allocate DBA resources.
Design/Develop
- Works with analysts to understand business needs.

Participates in cross-team and cross-project implementations. -
Translates logical data models into physical database designs. -
Develops physical databases. -
Assists system engineer in the design of highly available and redundant storage area networks. -
Establishes information flows. -
Develops and maintains enterprise data documentation and metadata models. -
Develops and provides database requirements to system administrators. -
Designs, monitors and maintains data replication primary and secondary databases. -
Develops, tests, maintains, and exercises procedures for backup, restoration and disaster recovery for high availability, high volume mission critical databases. -
Designs, codes, edits, installs and verifies stored procedures and functions for accessing, maintaining, and populating databases. -
Recommends and implements db solutions to support data integrity efforts. -
Designs and implements required security controls are designed around data and databases.
Testing
- Participates in projects that require testing and produces metrics and samples for further analysis.
Performance Management

Ensures optimal database performance and availability. -
Monitors utilization for capacity planning. -
Troubleshoots and resolves applications (ex., SQL) performance issues. -
Forecasts utilization patterns and recommends modifications or upgrades. -
Proposes and implements enhancements to improve system performance and reliability. -
Conducts application transaction volume and traffic analysis, and interprets the impact on database performance.
Database Administration

Maintains development, production, and multiple testing environments -
Oversees the upgrades of databases, adding new structures or elements. -
Provides, evaluates and develops data access tools and techniques. -
Directs the scheduling of DBMS software installs. -
Builds scripts automating the daily operations of database management. -
Monitors transactions between application systems and the database for the purpose of identifying and improving inefficiencies.
Database Security

Maintains and monitors database security, integrity and access controls. -
Controls privileges and permissions to database users. -
Provides audit trails to detect potential security violations. -
Makes recommendations to improve security. -
Participates in security investigations as needed. -
Assures that appropriate information security is applied in all tasks.
Database Support

Provides production support/ database access 24 hrs x 7 days a week and ensures high availability. -
Conducts Level 2 and 3 support. -
Troubleshoots databases accessibility, availability or operability problems. -
Determines the appropriate course of actions for problems, identifies and mitigates risks, and implements solutions. -
Escalates/communicates issues when necessary.

Assists in establishing and supporting enterprise policies, processes, and standards. -
Ensures standards are adhered to.
Service Level Agreements

Monitors performance against service agreement levels. -
Participates in the developing SLAs. -
Ensures that operating level agreements are met with internal/external customers.

- Evaluates future technologies and makes recommendations for software and hardware upgrades and technology solutions.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in programming/systems or computer science, information systems, specialized training, certification, or equivalent work experience. -
Typically requires 5 or more years of database administration experience working with various database management systems. -
Has a broad level of understanding surrounding information systems, application and/or Web standards and database licensing. -
Thorough understanding of performance monitoring, analysis and tuning.
