Position Description:

In the role of an International Scholars Immigration Specialist you will be working in our Human Recources Department.


Summary

With limited direct supervision, independently perform SEVIS operations and provide direct support, onboarding, training and lead engagement with international learners for the Medical College of Wisconsin. Ensure all international scholars scholars possess proper and valid visa documentation and knowledge of legal requirements associated with their status. Independently maintain comprehensive immigration student records, including CPT/OPT. Maintain the integrity of the organization by making independent decisions involving immigration laws affecting foreign national learners of MCW. Support MCW's employer sponsored visa programs, as needed.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Serve as MCW's sole staff member dedicated to the processing of international scholars attending MCW.
  • Manage all aspects of SEVIS operations for international students sponsored by MCW, including graduates engaged in CPT/OPT under authorization from MCW.
  • Ensure compliance of all student immigration procedures and documentation.
  • Provide direction, advice and guidance to international scholars, including conducting onboarding/training of international scholars and periodic training/education on relevant topics.
  • Provide consistent communication on matters related to immigration to Deans and other academic leadership, Registrar and other constituencies within the institution.
  • Process OPT and CPT requests and extensions, including verification of suitable employment in compliance with regulations.
  • Act as a Notary Public for the HR office, verifying documents for foreign nationals throughout the organization.
  • Represent MCW at local and regional/national NAFSA (International Association of International Educators) meetings; network with international advisors from other institutions on immigration policy issues.
  • Conduct training sessions for MCW staff members interested in learning more about international scholar programs, immigration laws and regulations.
  • Utilize numerous resources, such as the NAFSA manual and forums, immigration attorneys, internet searches and fellow international advisor contacts to research immigration-related questions posed by academic leaders, finance/administration, MCW department leaders or staff, or foreign nationals.
  • Stay current on all new policies and regulations related to immigration; communicate new laws to MCW staff, faculty and students when appropriate and relevant.
  • Maintain an Immigration/International Scholars Information website.


Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

Strong communication skills (oral and written) with an ability to facilitate engaging discussions/presentations and create written reports. Strong organizational and project management skills with an ability to collaborate in multiple and diverse projects. Strong project management and computer skills in Microsoft Suite. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to develop new ideas by analyzing complex, multi-faceted information. Ability to prioritize multiple assignments and deadlines. Technical knowledge of FERPA, F-1 visa regulations and J-1 program requirements. Knowledge of higher education operations, policies and best practices. Familiarity with MCW culture and ability to generally align talent and organizational development with MCW's mission and values as well as policies, procedures and practices. Attention to detail and focus on high-quality outcomes. Ability to work independently and come on campus as needed to serve learners.

Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis

Minimum Required Education: Bachelor's degree

Minimum Required Experience: 2 years administering SEVIS for a college or university and engaging directly with international scholars
