PRIMARY PURPOSE

The Senior Data Scientist is a principal source of technical expertise and guidance at RSG, driving the design and implementation of scalable data pipelines, advanced analytics, and visualization tools for transportation planning and analysis. This role ensures rigorous data quality control and leverages machine learning and AI to deliver efficient, high-quality solutions across the organization. As a mentor and innovator, the Senior Data Scientist guides team members, advances best practices, and plays a strategic role in delivering innovative solutions for our clients.

RESPONSIBILITIES




  • Leads the design, development, and maintenance of robust, automated data pipelines and tools that enable reliable, high-quality data flow across the organization





  • Champions rigorous quality control, monitoring, and validation processes to maintain data consistency with a focus on open-source technologies and Azure cloud resources





  • Leads and collaborates on the development and integration of AI/ML solutions into scalable production environments, ensuring reliability, performance, and maintainability





  • Develops and maintains data dashboards and visualizations that enable actionable insights for stakeholders





  • Mentors analysts and peers across RSG in effective data pipeline construction, reproducible data flows, code management, and best practices in analytics, visualization, and automation.





  • Manages complex projects for various project teams simultaneously.





  • Participates in client project calls representing RSG's technical methodology and approach.





  • Collaborates cross-functionally to translate business needs into technical solutions





  • Stays current with emerging trends in AI/ML (e.g. generative models, LLMs, MLOps) and proactively applies new techniques to improve organizational capabilities





  • Acts as a primary technical resource for complex data processing challenges, providing expert guidance and solutions in ETL, statistical analysis, and visualization to project teams and stakeholders.





QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience




  • 8+ years in data science or related field





  • 3+ years in building, maintaining, and debugging ETL pipelines.





  • Master's degree in data science or data-intensive field required; Ph.D. or equivalent professional experience preferred.





Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Minimum Requirements




  • Fluency in SQL and Python data processing libraries (polars, pandas, scikit-learn, PostgreSQL)





  • Experience designing, debugging, and maintaining scripted, version-controlled pipelines in Python and SQL, with tests, data validation and CI/CD, delivered with teammates or collaborators.





  • Demonstrated proficiency with collaborative development practices (git workflows, code reviews, branching strategies, issue tracking) on shared repositories.





  • Experience building and maintaining containerized workflows and automation (e.g. Docker, GitHub Actions, and CI/CD pipelines)





  • Expertise with advanced statistical analysis and machine learning (supervised, unsupervised, deep learning)





  • Extremely organized, detail-oriented, resourceful, and flexible.





  • Experience managing technical projects with multiple stakeholders (collaborators, clients, team members)





  • Demonstrated ability to deliver work on schedule in team settings





  • Ability to gain support for innovating and experimenting with new methodologies and technology.





  • Ability to connect technical work to business goals, adhere to budgets, and identify solutions that stakeholders can understand and use.





  • Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and teaming skills with colleagues and clients.





Preferred




  • Experience with open-source geospatial tools (e.g. PostGIS, shapely, geopandas, or R/sf), and data (e.g. LBS -- location-based services or GPS traces).





  • Experience building scripted dashboards/data apps (Shiny, Plotly/Dash, Altair, React + D3/Vega-Lite) using reproducible, deployable code





  • Experience with natural language processing (NLP), LLMs, MCP servers, or other advanced AI domains





  • Familiarity with the transportation industry, transportation planning, and modeling





  • Experience with survey science and statistics





  • Experience in business settings





  • Experience in a personnel management or mentorship role (i.e., coaching peers or juniors through reviews, pairing, or trainings)
