Research Fellow, PGY1 - Inner Ear Regeneration

Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary - MEI
United States, Massachusetts, Boston
243-245 Charles Street (Show on map)
Oct 14, 2025
Gene therapy and hair cell regeneration have shown great promise as new treatments for hearing loss that does not have any FDA approved drugs. One major obstacle to achieving treatment efficacy is our inability to deliver genes, mRNA, proteins and other molecules into the inner ear cell types efficiently. Dr. Wang's project is to test new delivery vehicles including viral and non-viral, which can efficiently target diverse inner ear cell types with minimal toxicity. The other project is to optimize hair cell regeneration using human inner ear organoids, with the potential for new treatment for hearing loss.

Default Job Description

The research fellow will be responsible for performing modification of AAV and non-viral delivery vehicles (eg LNP), single cell RNAseq, bioinformatics analysis to identify candidates in hair cell regeneration and synapse formation. She will test the delivery vehicles for DNA, RNA and protein for inner ear cell types first in vitro followed by in vivo. She will conduct experiments to demonstrate the new delivery method together with new molecules identified will lead to functional restoration of hearing in mouse models of human genetic hearing loss. She will further conduct hair cell regeneration and synapse formation in human inner ear organoids with enhanced efficiency and optimize the drug-like cocktail for human application.
