Job Summary/Overview
This position requires a person to perform set ups and operate CNC equipment to manufacture metal parts from raw material in a team based environment. Plans and performs a variety of machine operations utilizing numerical control machining centers to cut, shape, or form metal work pieces to specifications by performing the following duties:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Interprets complicated drawings, program sheets, instructions, and process sheets to determine work to be done.
- Read and understand blue prints.
- Performs diversified operations on numerical control machining centers.
- Performs a variety of milling, drilling, boring, or related operations to close and interrelated tolerances.
- Reviews setup sheet and specifications to determine machining sequence and dimensions of finished workpiece.
- Attaches fixture to machine bed and positions and secures workpiece in fixture according to setup instructions.
- Selects and installs cutting tools in machine spindle or magazine.
- Loads control media, such as disk, tape, or punch card, in machine control console or enters commands to retrieve preprogrammed machine instructions from database.
- Manipulates controls and enters commands to index cutting tool to specified set point and to start machine.
- Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions, such as worn or damaged cutting tools.
- Changes cutting tools and location of workpiece during machining process as specified in setup instructions.
- Performs a variety of inspection and gaging operations to insure maintenance of quality standards and specifications.
- Measures workpiece for conformance to specifications.
- Notifies supervisor of discrepancies.
- Utilizes override control to correct conditions that are out of tolerance or operating unusually.
- Adjusts machine feed and speed and changes cutters to machine parts according to specifications when automatic programming is faulty or machine malfunctions.
- Machines materials other than metal, such as composites, plastic, and rubber.
- Cleans machine, tooling, and parts.
- Performs machine maintenance.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Competencies, and Abilities
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form
- Must have experience and knowledge of basic hand tools
- Must be able to read dial and digital calipers, dial indicators, coaxial indicators, height gages, micrometers, and other measurement tools
- Must have a solid working knowledge of CNC controllers, including the use of work offsets, tool offsets, and light G-code programming
- Ability to safely, securely, and squarely setup workpieces with clamps and/or vises in a CNC machining center
- Ability to "indicate in straight" workpieces and fixtures in a CNC machining center
- Solid experience in squaring up raw input stock in a CNC machining center to create a workpiece ready to be machined to final features and dimensions
- Experience and knowledge of different types of HSS, solid carbide, and indexable cutting tools
- Ability to inspect and replace HSS, solid carbide, and indexable cutting tools in ER collet and heat shrink CNC tool holders
- Ability to monitor and adjust CNC programs in-process
- Ability to wrap and heat treat tool steel according to defined recipes
- Ability to setup and operate CNC equipment to safely produce accurate tooling that will meet production needs
- Must be able to use or run CNC machining centers, die grinders, bench grinder, hand stamps, vertical mill, radial arm drill, measurement tools, small heat treatment furnace, and 16lb sledge hammer
- able to regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
