Position Title: TOOL ENGINEER
Position Summary: Makes parts from prints using CNC and manual knee mills, surface grinders, saws and horizontal lathes. Repairs and builds internal tooling and fixturing. Performs hand work and repairs on large parts.
Reports to: Operations Manufacturing Team Leader (Machining) or Production Facility Manager
Personnel: Not applicable.
Accountabilities: Accountable for understanding machine operations and functions, developing and implementing machine and process improvements, following manufacturing SOPs and WIs, and assisting in creating manufacturing WIs.
Authorities: Not applicable.
Duties:
- Operate manual and CNC knee mills and horizontal lathes.
- Set up and operate surface grinders as detail or tooling modifications require.
- Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, routing instructions, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
- Reverse engineer details by documenting dimensional information via sketches or drawings or reproduce from existing details for replacement purposes.
- Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining as required by router instructions and good shop practice.
- Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines. Must be able to improvise setups using common tooling such as fixture plates, risers, angle plates, etc.
- Verify that all machined details are produced in a manner that meets print or router specifications, using precision measuring instruments. Request first piece inspection when producing multiple piece runs.
- Smooth and scrape parts fit, using various hand tools such as files and scrapers.
- Position and secure parts on surface plates with devices such as V-blocks, vises, and angle plates.
- Assemble parts into product using tools such as wrenches, hammers, and tweezers, and verify dimensions and alignments using measuring instruments such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks.
- Communicate with co-workers and supervisors to receive instructions and coordinate activities.
- Inspect and measure parts to maintain statistical process control charts
Job Qualification Requirements:
Educational Experience - A minimum of four years of trade school, vocational education, or apprenticeship. GED required.
Experience - Required to have specialized experience with particular materials and standard tool room equipment. Be able to adjust speeds and feeds for various material types from Aluminum to High temp alloys. A minimum of six years' work experience is preferred.
Physical Demands - The employee is required to:
- Stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor
- Exert 20 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or
- Exert 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or
- Exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
Certification Required - None
Visual Acuity - Near acuity and accommodation as required for reading computer screens, documents, machine dial gauges, blueprints, and precision measuring instruments used in the inspection of parts and machinery.
Hearing Ability - Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify and diagnose changes to take appropriate action.
Working Conditions - Normally works in a shop environment and may frequently be subject to:
- High noise levels from operating machines
- Physical hazards from moving equipment and machine parts
- Breathing fumes, dust, and mist
- Skin exposure to oils and cutting fluid
