Alongside the Payroll Tax Team, the Payroll Accountant is responsible for verifying and reconciling payroll transactions, assisting with processing year- end tax forms, and focusing on resolving issues with payroll and payroll tax general ledger accounts. This role supports the payroll team and compliance with tax laws across multiple states. You will work closely with the Payroll Team, Payroll Tax Team, Accounting, HR, and our external payroll providers.

This role operates within our growing Sonoco Services (S2) organization. It is an excellent opportunity to gain experience within a global organization and use the operations knowledge to explore further career growth within Sonoco Services or the broader Sonoco organization.

What you'll be doing:

  • Assisting with the reconciliation of payroll-related general ledger and intercompany interfaces and accounts.
  • Supporting monthly and yearly financial closings.
  • Managing the escheatment process for payroll payments.
  • Reviewing and analyzing payroll tax returns and W-2 (T4, RL-1) reporting for accuracy and completeness covering the US and Canada.
  • Analyzing payroll tax data to identify trends, discrepancies, or risks and reporting findings to management.
  • Serving as SME and assisting with project execution for large strategic projects impacting payroll accounting including but not limited to, new system implementations, new business acquisitions and divestitures, process improvement and process rationalization efforts.
  • Being proactive with audits to ensure data accuracy and compliance with SOX to identify any control weaknesses.
  • Overseeing distribution of confidential information as needed to PWC or internal audit as needed.
  • Assisting with year-end processing to ensure that tax forms are issued timely and accurately.
  • Must be able to research federal, state, and local rules and regulations for the U.S. and Canada to ensure compliance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This is a hybrid position located in Hartsville, SC. Will consider remote applicants as well.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
  • 4+ years of accounting experience.
  • Strong technical aptitude and ability to grasp a general knowledge of multiple disciplines and technologies.
  • Strong analytical and people skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications (particularly Excel, Word, and Teams).
  • Ability to effectively organize and structure activities.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of payroll accounting experience.
  • Experience with Workday or other payroll software.
  • ADP experience (Preferably ADP Smart Compliance).
  • Experience working in a fast-paced public company environment.
  • Experience reconciling payroll and payroll tax general ledger accounts.

Preferred Certifications: CPA or CPA Candidate

Compensation:

Payroll Specialist III: The annual base salary range for this role is from $70,080 to $78,840.
