Build Your Career. Build America's Future. We are hiring a Manager, Rail Fleet and Track Maintenance to be based in either Atlanta, GA, or Birmingham, AL. What You'll Do: Promote Safety. Take an active role prioritizing safety for yourself and others to ensure all assigned operations have zero accidents and are in total compliance with all Vulcan policies and procedures by having a working knowledge of Vulcan's Safety Manual and applicable rail industry regulations. Provide training to staff on rail safety protocols, inspection procedures, and proper maintenance practices. Conduct and Oversee Inspections. Lead and perform inspections of railcars, locomotives, track, and related infrastructure to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Identify and document defects or safety hazards, recommending corrective actions. Investigate rail incidents or accidents to determine causes and develop preventive measures. Determine Work Procedures. Implement a strategic and user-friendly schedule for maintenance of Vulcan's railcar and locomotive fleet, coordinating with operations and contractors. Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance activities, compliance reports, and metrics. Develop and implement best practices for railcar loading, unloading, and maintenance. Cost Control. Ensure timely routine services and schedule major/minor component replacements appropriately to achieve the lowest overall cost per ton, maximum availability, and life of the rail asset. Optimize utilization, minimize downtime, avoid unnecessary charges, and maximize tons shipped by rail. Audit Billing Repair Cards (BRC) from shops to ensure compliance with standards and billing accuracy. Cross-Functional Collaboration. Works closely with stakeholders on building specifications, justification, and selection of equipment to best meet Vulcan's Railcar Fleet Plan needs and continuous improvement goals. Manage, maintain, evaluate, and strengthen relationships and performance of railcar maintenance contractors. Works closely with stakeholders to schedule maintenance with minimal impact on rail shipping schedules. Works closely with stakeholders through locomotive and railcar mover Selection Processes to ensure each location has the appropriate leased or buy options that properly fit its intended application. Develop Talent and Grow the Business. Provide leadership by identifying and coordinating with others to provide any internal rail-related safety and operational training required or needed to perform standard duties. Develop best practices and guidelines for conducting track inspections and recommending improvements for safe and efficient rail operations. Qualifications
Skills You'll Need: Education & Experience. Bachelor's Degree OR equivalent (5+) years of experience in rail operations, specifically maintaining and/or working on railcars, components and rail/track infrastructure is required. Any of the following certifications would be a plus: Welding Inspector, NACE Conting Inspector Level 1, Track Safety Inspector. We may also consider someone with a mechanical or civil engineering background but with very limited direct rail experience, if they possess a solid technical foundation (mechanical/civil), certifications in related areas (e.g., welding, coatings, track safety), or hands-on experience that could translate well into this role. Technology Skills. Must have strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Must have the ability to learn and use other software and office equipment as needed to perform job requirements. Interpersonal Skills. Must have the ability to effectively communicate in a professional manner and work with all organizational levels within the company, as well as customers/individuals outside of the company. Ability to Travel. 15+ days a month of travel across Vulcan's footprint will be required for the position. Organizational Skills. Must have strong organizational and time management skills. Must have the ability to perform tasks accurately, consistently, and thoroughly. Must have the ability to complete projects without direct supervision and work under pressure to meet deadlines. Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously with a high degree of skill and accuracy. Problem Solving Skills.
