Job Family Description

Engineering roles perform engineering work in operations, production, construction, or maintenance environments. They may design and scale up manufacturing processes, instruments and equipment and tests manufactured products to maintain quality. They may plan, design, and estimate time and cost and oversees construction and maintenance of structures, facilities, systems, and components. They analyze and develop solutions to engineering problems related to manufacturing equipment and systems or the causes of component failures. They develop and apply engineering standards and procedures and provide advice on issues within the engineering field.

Discipline Description

Civil/Structural/Architect (C/S/A) Engineers provide engineering support for civil and structural installations and systems (e.g., roads, bridges, dams, building structures, stacks etc.) in an operating nuclear materials processing plant or as part of the broader site infrastructure. They identify system concepts and determine system functional and technical requirements, develop, and analyze equipment performance, monitor system performance, troubleshoot, and resolve problems and ensure operation within technical, regulatory and safety basis requirements. They propose and develop process/system improvements including equipment upgrades, and plant modifications.

Geotechnical engineers ensure the safety and sturdiness of foundations for streets, buildings, and other structures and systems. They focus on how these manmade objects interact with the earth, including soil and rock.

Structural engineers design and assess major projects, such as buildings, bridges, and dams, to ensure their strength and durability. They provide design and construction oversight of structural engineering tasks.

Some Typical Duties & Responsibilities Include:

SRNS is seeking an experienced Civil Site Design Engineer to support the Design Engineering group. The selected engineer will be integrated into the site development design team and will contribute to the success of our company by providing the design and engineering oversight of site grading, utilities, stormwater drainage and soil erosion control associated with projects at SRS. Training and mentoring will be provided by SRNS for both technical skills and professional development.

Primary responsibilities include:
* Design of site grading and stormwater drainage systems
* Development of hydrologic stormwater runoff and detention calculations
* Design of roadway and pavement
* Routing and design of underground utilities
* Preparation of earthwork quantities
* Design of erosion and sediment controls
* Preparation of Construction Specification Institute (CSI) specifications
* Development of hydraulic calculations
* Review of vendor documents
* Interface between various disciplines including project management
* Ability to walk down systems in the field and perform inspections during construction
* Engineering services shall be provided using SRNS processes and procedures
* Programmatic guidance will be provided by SRNS

Experience/Skills must include:
* Preparation of site development drawings including site plot plans, grading and drainage plans, and erosion and sediment control plans
* Proficient in 3D CAD civil design software (Bentley Microstation and OpenRoads, or similar)
* Able to prepare CSI specifications
* Proficient in stormwater modeling software (HydroCAD or similar) and design of stormwater management systems
* Roadway design including horizontal and vertical alignment, preparation of plan and profile drawings and pavement systems
* Design of underground utilities, including layout, material and joint selection, for water and wastewater systems
* Working knowledge of applicable National Codes and Standards and pertinent South Carolina Environmental Regulations

Scope technical tasks and develop creative solutions to assigned problems. Begin using SRNS systems and meeting SRNS requirements with minimal supervisory guidance. Accepts complex tasks and receives minimal guidance from senior professionals. Incorporate conventional engineering or scientific practices and a variety of complex features such as complicated technical requirements, application of new or special materials or processes and difficult coordination or oversight requirements into problem solving and program planning. Provide limited guidance and direction to less senior engineering professionals. Carry out development and qualification programs on tasks concurrent with other phases such as design and fabrication to better evaluate and minimize future problems. Develop alternate solutions to existing problems. Perform all detail work necessary to determine best solutions. Evaluate proposals and make recommendations based on proposed projects/tasks in area of assignment. May delegate portions of the detail work to less senior personnel. Prepare costs and schedule estimates on proposed projects/tasks in assigned area. Demonstrate cost and schedule consciousness through timely completion of assigned tasks and projects. Prepare manuals and other documents supporting or publicizing the technical effort. Demonstrate creative ability through medium of patent disclosures, problem solving, engineering reports, technical papers and articles.

Required Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or architecture plus at least five years of experience (YOE) in a relevant role, OR Master's degree in relevant field plus at least two years of experience (YOE), OR Doctoral degree in relevant field

We'd Also Like to See

Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Bachelor's degree in Engineering with emphasis in Civil Engineering related courses, or current registration as a Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering.

Previous SRS Engineering or DOE facility experience is preferred.

Must be able to obtain an "L" clearance.

Understands and applies advanced knowledge of discipline's standard theories, concepts, principles and techniques.

Working knowledge of standard engineering/scientific practices and applications.

Security Clearance Information

SRNS is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug & alcohol test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, criminal records, and employment history, and education verifications. Positions with SRNS may require applicants to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Factors such as pre-employment background review results, dual citizenship status, and unpaid and/or unfiled taxes may impact your ability to obtain a security clearance.
