The Wisconsin Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC), within the Department of Medicine, Division of Geriatrics and Gerontology, offers a unique opportunity for a Nurse Practitioner to conduct research in the field of aging and dementia, and seek to establish effective prevention, treatment and diagnostic tests for Alzheimer's disease and other causes of dementia. The program has a strong commitment to partnering with communities to ensure that representative and high-risk populations are represented in research. The research nurse practitioner (NP) has an integral role within the ADRC and serves as a clinical expert within a research team. The research nurse practitioner assists Principal Investigators (PIs) and Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs) with the operations of clinical research studies, under the guidelines of research protocols and UW Madison policies.

The research nurse practitioner operates within a larger team and often works closely with scientists, program managers, participant recruitment specialists, schedulers, study coordinators and students across the ADRC and other AD-related programs. The NP will perform physical and neurological exams; perform lumbar punctures; interpret research blood test results, cognitive testing results and electrocardiograms; evaluate serious adverse events; maintain participant records; participate in diagnostic consensus case conferences; provide on-call and back-up support to investigators as requested; provide advice to participants regarding their health concerns, with special attention to creating a culturally safe environment for the participant; assess decision making capacity; and return research results back to participants including biomarker results. The NP will work chiefly at University Hospital but may work at community sites in Madison and perform duties such as participating in blood draws, and travel between sites to perform physical and neurological exams, and complete one-on-one sessions with participants to communicate the participants results to them and advise helpful practices.

The research nurse practitioner may participate in the recruitment of subjects for the ADRC and related research studies through attendance at outreach events. They may have opportunities to speak with supporting organizations about Alzheimer's disease research and current findings. The applicant will communicate and coordinate with multiple research related departments, including Office of Clinical Trials, UW Human Subjects IRB, UW Pharmaceutical Research Center and the Clinical Research Unit for study start up, maintenance, and closure. The applicant will work on affiliated studies such as the Wisconsin Registry for Alzheimer's Prevention (WRAP) study and possibly with industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated trials.


  • The work schedule is flexible and will be determined at the time of hire.

  • This position requires work to be completed onsite, at a designated campus work location.

  • This position has been identified as a position of trust with access to vulnerable populations. The selected candidate will be required to pass an initial caregiver check to be eligible for employment under the Wisconsin Caregiver Law and every four years.

  • Candidates must have the ability to work both independently and cooperatively within the clinical research team.

  • Develops, implements, collects data, and evaluates primary health care services as directed by individual care plans
  • May provide expertise, training, and guidance to the community, peers, and/or students
  • Assesses, diagnoses, and treats illnesses, and manages chronic health problems
  • Educates patients and their support systems on how to manage conditions and to promote the health and well-being of patients and those around them
  • Collaborates with research teams to develop and implement study visit protocols, including serious adverse events evaluation, prescreening medical records, interpreting lab, imaging and ECG results, and returning research results to participants
  • Performs lumbar puncture procedures
  • Develops individualized care plans based on medical assessments in accordance with medical best practices and established rules and regulations

Compensation:

The expected salary range (full-time base, prorated for appointment percentage) for this position is $100,000 up to $110,000 for highly experienced candidates. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse (RN) License required by start date of position.

  • Certification to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Wisconsin required by start date of position.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience or training to work with geriatric patients, persons with cognitive impairment, and individuals from under-representative and high-risk populations

  • Experience in clinical research, neurology, and/or performing procedures


Education:

Master's Degree required. The successful candidate must be a graduate from an accredited nursing school. The successful candidate must also be certified or be eligible to obtain certification to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Wisconsin.
