Summary:

The Manager of Specialty Pharmacy Clinical Operations is a clinical leader responsible for maintaining the specialty pharmacy business in accordance with departmental standards, internal and external reporting requirements, accreditation standards, and pharmacy laws and regulations. The Manager has the qualifications to perform clinical oversight for the services provided. The Manager supports the specialty pharmacy objective to have qualified clinicians accountable for decisions affecting patients and delivery of optimal medication therapy. The Manager oversees the patient management program to meet all specialty pharmacy accreditation standards and requirements from accrediting bodies, payers and manufacturers. The Manager provides oversight of pharmacy practice programs, medication use systems, and quality initiatives to detect, mitigate, and prevent medication adverse events and work to ensure medication use is aligned with evidence-based best practices and regulatory standards. They also work with interdisciplinary programs to deliver medication therapy management within patient care services and to ensure pharmaceutical care programs are appropriately integrated throughout the institution.

Administration


  • Serves as the supervising manager for the specialty pharmacy clinical pharmacist team
  • Manages staff schedule and coverage, including on-call
  • Provides coaching and development plans as needed
  • Assesses staffing utilizing objective metrics in collaboration with the director of specialty pharmacy
  • Recruits, hires and trains specialty clinical pharmacists
  • Ensures clinical pharmacist teams' compliance with required operational, accreditation and contracting-related training
  • In collaboration with clinical pharmacist team, identifies opportunities for scholarly work and supports team in study development, presentation and publication
  • Provides oversight for liaison operations
  • Monitors and reviews workflow queues
  • Collaborates with liaison leadership to address gaps in service
  • Collaborates with liaison leadership to coordinate systems training and assess documentation accuracy
  • Responsible for and has the qualifications to provide oversight of specialty pharmacy clinical operations and services
  • Serves as the organization's senior clinical staff person
  • Provides guidance for the clinical operational aspects of specialty pharmacy program
  • Provides oversight of the clinical decision-making aspects of specialty pharmacy program
  • Develops, implements, and oversees the specialty pharmacy Patient Management Program.
  • Maintains an updated Patient Management Program policy and procedures
  • Maintains templates for the specialty pharmacy care plans
  • Provides guidance to specialty pharmacy clinical staff regarding all patient management decisions and operations.
  • Develop Quality Improvement Programs (QIP) that relate to specialty pharmacy patient care.
  • Identifies and implements quality improvement programs and continuous quality assurance initiatives to advance the medication use systems and promote optimal patient outcomes.
  • Oversees QIP activity and present findings at the quarterly Quality Management Committee meetings
  • Technology systems management and reporting
  • Liaises with IT departments to address development and adjustments of systems related to patient management program (eg. Compass Rose, MSOT grouper, etc.)
  • Develops and presents reports addressing the patient management programs' compliance with accreditation requirements
  • Develops and presents reports addressing clinical pharmacist team's quality of work and productivity

Staffing


  • Provides direct patient care and perform in an exemplary manner all duties outlined in specialty pharmacy program policies.
  • Works as an active member of multidisciplinary team and collaborates with healthcare providers within decentralized patient care areas.
  • Makes appropriate evidence-based, patient-centered medication recommendations.

Continuing Education


  • Remains current through reading professional literature and/or attending professional continuing education conferences and professional meetings.
  • Mains preceptor licensure and relevant CE requirements

Committee Participation


  • Provides quarterly updates on patient management program activities and clinical QIPs to the Quality Management Committee for review and approval.
  • Leads the monthly Clinical Pharmacist Meeting
  • Collects feedback from clinical pharmacists regarding patient management program updates for continuous program improvement

Job Requirements:

Education/Skills


  • Graduate of ACPE accredited school of pharmacy
  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree required
  • PGY1 training required
  • PGY2 SPAL or HSPAL training preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required

Experience


  • 3+ years of specialty pharmacy experience required
  • Supervisor or leadership experience preferred
  • Significant knowledge and expertise in advanced pharmacy practice, specialty medication therapy management, and specialty evidence-based medicine required
  • Knowledge of URAC and ACHC accreditation standards required
  • Prior didactic experience (IPPE, APPE, resident) required
  • EPIC suite of products experience strongly preferred (EMR, Compass Rose, Willow Ambulatory)

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications


  • Licensed pharmacist in the state of practice required
  • Pharmacy preceptor license required
  • Relevant board certification required (eg. CSP, BCACP, BCOP, BCPS, BCMTMS, BCGP)
