JOB SUMMARY:
The Arts and Culture Internship presents an exciting opportunity for a high school or college student to contribute meaningfully to the programs, events and initiatives led by the Department of Arts and Culture. The position involves contributing to key programs and initiatives including the Art in City Hall program, the Cultural Asset Mapping and Public Art Database initiatives, and research on innovative programs and policies. The role provides needed support and learning opportunities for a new department in the City whose mission is to ensure arts and culture are accessible to all residents across the City of Frederick. The position reports to the Manager of Arts and Culture and interfaces daily with other City staff, supports interdepartmental collaboration and community engagement, and may require some evening and weekend work with advanced notice.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works with the Manager of Arts and Culture to identify areas of improvement and innovation in the permitting and security requirements and processes of approval for municipal public art projects, and non-city-led festivals, parades, and other cultural events.
- Contributes to ongoing and new research into best practices in the field of public art and the development of innovative programs, policies and processes, that help make Frederick a place for arts and culture to thrive.
- Provides data-entry and research support for initiatives including the department's Cultural Asset Mapping Initiative and Public Art database.
- Supports key city and departmental goals and initiatives regarding events, arts and culture programs, and community engagement.
- Provides support for events initiated by the Department of Arts and Culture and the Office of the Mayor.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Current student enrolled in a high school or college (undergraduate or graduate) degree program.
- Demonstrated interest in local government, community engagement, art management, or public service.
REQUIRED SKILLS (Communication/Language; Mathematical; Computer; etc.):
- Exceptional organizational and time management capabilities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to multitask and manage multiple events and assignments simultaneously.
- Creative problem-solving and adaptability.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, etc.), etc.
OTHER DESIRABLES:
- Degree, coursework, or interest in public administration, art history, studio arts, or arts management.
- Experience with municipal government or cultural institutions.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in another language (e.g., Spanish, American Sign Language, etc.).
