Description

Summary: The Community Planning Grants Fellow will engage in research projects to enhance the impact of the City's federal community planning grant portfolio through data analysis and research of best practices and innovative interventions in process and planning. The fellow will learn the ins and outs of local government development, finance and federal requirements for grants. This experience will be gained by participating in the full spectrum of the Grants Management Division's process and functions for federal grants such as CDBG, HOME, ESG grants and state grants such as through the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

(40 hours per week, position will last approximately one year depending on funding available)

Examples of Duties

    Example of Function:
    • Participates in planning and reporting processes for federal grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) through: data analysis and data mapping; project, program and records review; researching best practices; and organizing community engagement processes and activities.
    • Learn by participation in local government finance, development and federal regulatory processes.
    • Collaborates with team members across the Community Development Department for effective research, planning and outcomes.
    • Internal and community-based problem solving, relating internal processes to external outcomes and assessing communication and community engagement between the division, department and public.
    • Additional related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Public Administration, Political Science, Policy, Urban Planning, or Community Development. Applicants with degrees in related fields are invited to apply if educational background and experience provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to excel at the above described functions.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Previous local government experiencein community development. Master's degree from an accredited college or university in in Public Administration, Political Science, Policy, Urban Planning, Community Development or a related field.
