Position Overview

We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Data Engineer Intern to assist in researching and identifying sensitive data across enterprise systems, including data subject to HIPAA and PCI-DSS regulations. In this role, you will help analyze databases, review data flows, and develop basic tools or scripts to support automated data classification. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in data governance, security compliance, and modern data engineering practices.

Key Responsibilities:
Research and document data compliance requirements (HIPAA, PCI-DSS, etc.).

Assist in scanning and classifying sensitive data across databases, files, and data pipelines.

Work with data engineering and compliance teams to map data flows and understand data lineage.

Build or support development of scripts and utilities to identify PII, PHI, and payment data.

Contribute to the evaluation of data classification tools and data masking strategies.

Document findings and support compliance reporting efforts.

Help improve metadata tagging and data inventory practices.

Qualifications:
Current enrollment in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field.

Familiarity with Snowflake.

Basic programming skills in Python, Java, or a similar language.

Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Interest in data privacy, compliance, and security topics.

Preferred Qualifications:
Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.

Understanding of sensitive data types (e.g., PII, PHI, payment data).

Knowledge of HIPAA, PCI-DSS, or other data protection regulations.

Experience using data classification or data loss prevention (DLP) tools is a plus.
